BWAAAHAAAAAHAAAAA -- I'm a Bass Player!!!

Sorry but I had to get that out -- had a rehearsal tonight and I'm in REALLY good spirits!

As some of you know, I got serious about playing bass this year -- after several years of piddling around and spending way too much time on Talkbass.

Earlier this year, I got the gig as the "First Sunday" bassist at my Church and I played my debut a couple of weeks ago. Later this month, my church/choir is doing a visitation to a sister church and as a part of that, we're doing a concert. Tonight was musicians-only rehearsal and I got reminded all over again why I love this so much.

Have you ever been at that rehearsal where everyone was having fun but was stone-cold-prepared? That was this rehearsal -- everyone was locked-in tonight and guess what? *I* was the one holding down the pocket!!!

The killer is that these guys are all semi-pro/pro level players -- I'm still pinching myself that they let me play with them, let alone that I can actually hang.

Anyway -- I'm a Bass Player -- and tonight, all is right with the world!

I love those moments!

I had a strange kind of whole-group audition a while back, say three years or so ago. A drummer I knew was working with a female backup singer who wanted to do her own thing as a front-person. She had met a producer guy who was making optimistic noises. So the drummer calls me and asks if I want in on all this. We go to the home studio of the producer guy. He has a guitar player he's worked with before. I'd worked with the drummer fifteen or twenty years prior. The singer had only worked with the drummer.

The five of us worked through a few old covers that everyone knew with no difficulty, then started trying out songs that most of us were unfamiliar with. Everything sounded good. It was definitely the highest level I've ever played at in a first-time jam. It was awesome. We started out sounding like we'd rehearsed for a few weeks.

Unfortunately, the producer guy was only in it to try to get into the singers pants. And the personality match was awful. so That band didn't happen. But the drummer and singer and I got together with my old guitarist and played for a year or so until she got a promotion that required moving to Houston.
