Cabinet shipping problems!!!!!!

I have never had any real problems shipping any cabinets, till this particular model of cab. I just sold on here my two Avatar compact 15 cabs. An Eminence KappaPro15LF in each cab. They were a great souinding cab. I'd say Avatars best 15 cab ever. Avatar no longer makes these cabs, or any 15's and I now think I know why. One went to a TBer in Colorado, the other to a TBer in Rhode Island, I'm in Wisconsin. Both were boxed up perfectly, with the cab corner cardboards, that come right from Avatar, or the same from Carvin, lets say. They fit the box like a glove. No flipp, floopy hard to handle box, but a nice firm fit easy to grab and go with box. Both of them got to their destinations, with the magnets slid enough to pinch the voice coils in place, and of course stick the cone in place. Now I know why Avatar quit selling 15's. These companies are just to rough on the package, on their end. That cab would have to be dropped at least two to three feet, or more to slide that magnet out of place. Why do they ask you what's in the box at the get go?? If anyone would look, it may get some better handling.
I did shipping and receving as part of my job for over 20 years, so I know how to pack and ship. They just came back to my local drop off site. I'll pick them up in a day or two. Anyone know what my next step should be? I just know they are going to say it was my fault, and I know damn well that it's not. I did have enough insurance on them to cover the deal, but if they charge it back to me, how can I fight city hall here??Anyone gone through this before?? On hind site, had I removed the drivers and shipped them separately, all would be good, but the shipping would have been so high, that no one would have bought them anyway.

Anyone have any help for me??

They had to have dropped the box, far enough, and hard enough to slide the magnet, on the back of the driver, out of place just enough to pinch the voice coil, and cone in stationary place, as they cone will no longer move at all. Stuck in place, by the magnet.

Bummer. This is a good example of why I hate to ship cabinets, especially small cabinets. Small but relatively heavy boxes seem to take a LOT of abuse when shipped. I assume the employees drop them onto the converyors, into the trucks, etc. I've never had a problem with 410 sized cabs, but the little 112's, etc. are just deadly.

Sorry this happened. The only solution is to not ship cabs. That can be tough, but I insist on local sales with cabs, and while it takes a while, it usually works.

Everyone should be able to take a tour of the two major shipping companies just to see the big conveyors and how heavy packages come tumbling down! Not saying it happens all the time, but enough. I was going to ship a Schroeder 1210R professionally packed and the price to do that was more than the shipping would have been! Double boxed in a double sided heavy duty box, with enough packing to stuff a trunk. Lucky for me the buyer was local.

I even bought the extra insurance to cover this from UPS. Should it be my problem or theirs. That is who gets stuck paying back these two TBer's, me or them?? And now that Christmas is over, you know where that cash went.

Thank goodness you have insurance. I hate to say it, but it's probably your hassle on that, since the buyers would expect 'undamaged goods' to be delivered, and the insurance was paid by you, and hence payable to you.

However, I have luckily not had to make a claim. However, I've had a couple cabs shipped new from manufacturers destroyed in shipping, and they sent me new ones and then collected the insurance.

It's a pisser.

Joe, FWIW we have a family member who works at Forward Air. They are a terminus-to-terminus shipper only, but will ship ANYTHING you can get on a pallet. They do ship a LOT of hogs, so they have to be more careful the UPS. They also ship entire front clips, such as '57 Chevys.

She tells me that FA is very competitive in pricing. I have yet to ship a big cab, but will check into them, if the recipient is ok with terminus delivery.

Hold your ground with UPS, they will delay forever and bang you ever which way, to beat you out of your claim.

In my 'retailer by day' role, I run a UPS/FedEx/Print/Copy kind of place. In general I tell customers that the boys in Brown or Purple get tired and they will roll heavy boxes end over end, etc. Best to keep them under 40 lbs if possible. Otherwise, conveyors belts drops, or off the back end of the truck falls are not uncommon.

Bgavin has a point in the alternative shipping world (see above). They are really the best way to ship something heavy and 'delicate'.

Check with the ICC (Interstate Comm. Commision) if you get insurance hassles. Don't open the boxes, the receiver should have notified you of carton damage and had them inspected there instead of shipping back to you.

I did get e-mails from both of the guys who got the cabs. They both made a claim with UPS about the cabs. One of the guys, said that UPS was sending a guy out, to inspect them, but I haven't heard anything from either of them since that communication. The place I sent then from is my local hardware store, about 30 miles away. They called me today, and said they had received one of the cabs today. I told him, the other may show back too, and to let me know. I can't make it there for 2 days. We live way out in the woods, and I have a Doc appointment in Duluth tomorrow.

At least you stand a good chance for a claim on the one that was not returned. The other should not have shipped it back unless UPS paid the claim.
