Just got home from a great concert by the Cal. Guitar Trio. They appeared at All Saints Church here in Frederick, at a benefit for an anti-domestic violence group.
According to the program, they've been together for 17 years. None of them are from CA, but they were based in L.A. for their first few years.
Any one of them would make a fine solo act, but together they really do an amazing show!
All 3 play Breedlove guitars and all 3 had Roland V-Guitar processors, in addition to a few other floor gizmos.
They opened with "Walk Don't Run", and covered everything from classical to the Shadows' "Apache", with several originals as well. At one point they did a classical piece where each player only played every third note. Player #1 did the first note, 4th note, 7th note, etc, player #2 did 2nd note, 5th note, 8th note, etc, player #3 did 3rd note, 6th note, etc. Think about that for a minute. Sounds a bit difficult, doesn't it. But they executed it beautifully!
They closed with Pink Floyd's "Echoes", and came back for the encore with Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody". So cool! I highly recommend seeing them if they play near you. Well worth it!
But don't bring your young children. A guy in the row in front of us brought his 2 young daughters. The 10-year-old behaved herself, but the 6-year-old spent the entire show on daddy's lap, giving him reproachful looks and asking repeatedly if they could go home now. He tried to shush her, but failed. My sister-in-law, who was sitting right behind him, proclaimed that the whole show was ruined for her by this girl. Parents, don't be stupid, if your kid is too young, get a sitter.

I've seen them a few times. Once was at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano with Tony Levin on bass and Pat Mastelotto on drums.
Another time they played the Acoustic Cafe at NAMM a few years ago, and they played Heart of the Sunrise. Partway through the song a guy walked slowly out onto the stage, and I thought it was some irrational audience member trespassing. But when he reached the mic we realized it was Jon Anderson. |

The seminar was hosted by Robert Fripp. The "front man", Paul Richards, mentioned Fripp's name several times during the show, and said that they had done well over 100 shows with King Crimson.

Just saw them again at the same venue last night, so I thought I'd dig up this thread. They are starting another tour, this was the second show. Excellent show, just a couple of oopses, to let us know they are human.
Also, Tyler, the soundman they've had on their last 6 years of tours, is not with them this trip. So no melodica, and the swooshy effect on their version of Pink Floyd's "Echoes" was a little sketchy because Paul had to do it himself onstage. He explained that Tyler used to take care of that from the board.
But fantastic musicianship and a great selection of tunes made it easy to overlook any glitches. A couple more shows should have it all ironed out.
After the show, I bought their 2008 CD, Echoes, which includes the Pink Floyd tune, and Tubular Bells, Bohemian Rhapsody, a couple of Bach pieces, a Limp Bizkit song, and, of all things, Freebird. With vocals! I'm eager to hear that.

| | | | I saw them a few years ago at The Knitting Factory in Hollywood. Great show. Tony Levin played bass with them. Before the show, Levin came out and sat with us in the audience with us and chatted--the guy I was with had swapped E-mails with him before, and sent him one that night that said "Hey, I'm in the audience, why don't you come out and say Hi." So he did.
