Yeah, probably, but being a lone club (or flub) member is so sad. I can't see many people joining the "Fanadian Flub"

If it's a "flub",

you might have good luck with folks joining by mistake.

Hmmm, that's true

I must now weight the benefits of having a "Flub" full of people who joined mistakenly and creating a club full of Fanadians. Or rather, Fanadian, because I would likely be the only one

Hello fellow Canucks!

My name is Shayne. I live in Victoria BC, I have a hand made custom left handed 4 string bass, a MIA Ampeg B4r with matching 8x10E cab. I have been playing since 2005, I am 30, can I please have a number? Thank you, Cheers.

+1 for the Canadian Classifieds, I’m all for that one

The following should be a sticky in the classifieds, for Canadian buyers.

Sorry in advance for the following long blubs guys, but you need to now this.

There is absolutely no problem buying form the US and having items shipped to Canada ( it’s part of the Free Trade Agreement ), read what follows.

The bad stuff you absolutely need to know.
- Never, never have anything shipped by UPS, they will charge you Brokerage fees on top of the shipping you already paid ( FedEx also charges Brokerage fees ), you will also have to pay the GST of the declared value of the item after the brokerage fees have ben added.
- Brokerage fees are a Bogus charge, it’s nothing more than a cash grab that can not be explained by any carrier, it’s basically a charge for there internal paperwork for having imported the goods.
I have seen brokerage fees in excess of $150 on a $600 Bass, add the 5% GST to that and your crying ( Yep we are talking $193 of over charges on top of what you paid for shipping ), it’s a rip off.

The good stuff you need to know.
- There is no duty on items shipped from the US, it’s all part of the Free Trade Agreement.
- Have the items you purchased shipped by Postal Service only ( United States Postal Service ).
- If your buying a Bass, ask the seller to look into shipping the Bass by Postal service " Global express, 3-5 days, insured Trackable ", it will cost you about $70.oo from one end of the country to the next.

Once the item comes to your door.
- The Postal service will charge you a flat fee of $5.oo for the paperwork for having imported the item.
- You will have to pay the GST of the declared value of the item.
Example, Bass sold for $600 USD = $712 CDN today x 5% GST = $35.60, add the $5 flat fee from the Post office and it’s yours.

You do the Math.
If you deal with UPS, you will get gouged ( as per my example, $193 of needless over charges ).
Or,
Deal with the Post Office / USPS and it’s as easy as 1,2,3 and it will make you happy ( as per my example, $40.60 and it’s yours ).

My 2 cents.

Just a slight correction, there's no duty on items MADE in the USA. So you're good to go for that MIA Fender or GK amp.

If it's not made in the USA, it's not covered under NAFTA.

You rock! What great, concise, reality-based information. Certainly makes it easier than trying to collect the same info from the Canada Customs site, which I haven't found intuitive at all.

One question to add - do you know the effect of PST on this equation?

Isn't duty just the GST anyway? The shipping and brokerage fees that really suck, but there's no GST on items sold as used by non-dealers in Canada. You only have to collect GST if you are doing it as a business, i.e. making over $30,000 a year selling goods. However, importing things, the government doesn't know and doesn't care if the dude you're buying it from is a business or not, they want their pound of flesh.

Agreed that UPS sucks, but many sellers do not want to ship via USPS.

Buying from the US sucks now with the CDN dollar where it is; it was worthwhile when the dollar was on par, because US stuff was still cheaper even when you paid all that other stuff, but now it's impossible. We need a Canadian classifieds, and craigslist and Kijiji aren't cutting it!

Let's carry the Classifieds conversation over to this thread:

And keep the Canadian Club thread as a meeting place only for Canadians, ok?

Close enough

I am technically not a Canadian, but I used to live in Buffalo (where we have a large Labatt's distribution center) , and I bought most of my gear at Clubbass.
Is that close enough for the club?

Add another Canuckian to the club: me!

I live in Ottawa, Ontario, but am originally from Montreal, Quebec.

I currently play bass in Speed Metal band Exciter.

My main bass is my custom handmade Moser Custom Shop Arachnid Ultra. I also own 5 other basses.

My main rig is my 1973 or 1974 Marshall Super Bass head into early 80s Marshall JCM800 Bass Series 4x12 and 2x15 cabs. I used the '73 amp on our latest CD: Thrash Speed Burn.

Cheers!

Awlright, number me up- gotta keep up with the rest of the TB'ers in VanCity

Craig M, also known as El Tookay, living in Vancouver area, age you don't want to know, attitude of 22 till i die

Gear-wise? Check the handle, eh? G&L fretted and fretless basses, Genz-Benz Shuttle 6.0, Schroeder 410R. Known to conspire with The TrailerPark Playboys, RetroRockets, The Greyhounds, and a few other things that legal obligations can't allow me to mention.

In closing, i'd like to say that the Toronto Maple Leafs stink, but given the sorry state of the Vancouver Canucks, I'd be eating crow...uh, go Bruins? 'Hawks?
