Just realized that today is August 27th. It was 21 years ago today that Stevie Ray Vaughn was killed in a helicopter crash leaving a concert at Alpine Valley. I know this is a bass forum but I'm sure there are others here who appreciated SRV's music and still miss him like I do. It was one of those "I will never forget where I was when I heard the news" moments.

Tragic loss.

We do covers of Pride and Joy and Cold Shot, and the crowd loves them. SRV has an appeal that has lived on long after he left us. I watched the Behind the Music about his life and it was a very interesting story. It was sad that he died as soon as he overcame his addictions and got his life back on track. It's hard to believe it's been that long already. I must be getting old...

Never got into SRV, but he sure was talented. I don't remember where I was when he died, I only remember where I was when Cobain died.

SRV was, IMO, the greatest electric guitarist ever. I thought that when he died; I still think so. His records I never cared much for - his fire, intensity, and stream-of-conciousness playing never translated to the studio. Live though, he was a completely different animal. He (along with #1 ) had the most ferocious tone I`ve ever heard. PLayed completely in the moment; no two live performances were played the same. And his technique was flawless - rarely a sour note. To say his death was a massive loss would be a massive understatement. I was not even a blues fan during his day - I was a teen, a fan of the hair-metal 80s rock. SRV did NOT fit into that scene at all, and I didn`t know anyone who even knew who he was. But I first saw him on MTV Unplugged - it was truly life-changing. I couldn`t believe what I`d just seen - in four minutes, he completely annihlated every famous guitarist popular during that time. I bought all his records, but the live performances were where you really saw his greatness. While getting ready for school one morning, I flipped on the TV and saw it announced on CNN. I felt like the wind was kicked out of me, sat down, and cried. It just seemed so cruel. One of my fave clips, an outtake from the last ACL appearance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2qtcp-T_q8

I took 3 of my teenage sons to see SRV live. Two of my sons were big EVH metal fans. I remember they were kind of scoffing that this guy was a blues player and couldn't hold a candle to EVH. As soon as he started to play my sons sat up in their seats and did not utter another word until we walked out of the concert hall and one of them says "EVH doesn't stand to his shoe tops". True story and one of them turned into an excellent blues guitar stylist.

SRV spewed soul on stage just like Jimi. One of the most natural and totally engrossed players I have ever witnessed.

I was at the show at Alpine Valley the night Stevie died. I didn't actually hear the news until the next morning on WXRT in Chicago. Called off work and sat around listening to SRV the whole day through.

I was never what I'd call a huge fan, but I really loved his music and saw him many times, including his first trip to Chicago. One of the very few musicians I really miss as I felt he had turned a corner and had a lot more to give us all. It might be a good evening to roll some great music and just enjoy.

Didn't Cobain die the same week as Bill Hicks? That's 17 years ago....

He played at Pine Knob in Clarkston, Mi the show before the last show. My buddy called me up he had an extra ticket, free of charge, and for some reason I couldn't go. I said to my friend, O'h I'll just see him the next time he comes back to Michigan......and the rest is history.
