Can't Find Right Tone >:O

Sign in to disble this ad
So I recently got a new head and cab and for a few weeks, I've been fiddling with the knobs on the head but can't quite get the tone I want and it's getting bothersome.

I'm looking at something that has a nice growl yet punchy and clean. I don't want anything too flat with no distinct attack. Something like this: "Forevermore" - onething'09 Live - YouTube or this: HILLSONG UNITED - THE TIME HAS COME - YouTube

I have a MIM Fender Deluxe with a P/J combo pickup, a Carvin BX500, and a GK 115MBE cab. Is there any settings you guys recommend to obtain this tone? Or is the P/J pickup config just not good for the tone I want?

Tone comes from everything. But at the simplest and most cost effective things to tweak, try new strings and new technique. For example, when I want grind I use a pick on very bright rounds. When I want thump I use flats and play with my fingers.

See if something that simple will help. If it doesn't, I'd look at changing the rig before the bass (namely the 1x15 for a 4x10).

EQ is so important. Frequencies on the bass are even more important than on a guitar amp. Small differences can make the difference between mud and music.
