Can't stop buying stuff..

I'm low on cash. I'm going to college next year. I will have to pay it, also I will need an apartment and a car. Saving money for serious things like education, I've just bought myself a VT bass and EBS octabass. I don't even need them, I play in a band with maybe one gig per few months. But I just can't help it, I have this need to buy bass gear.
Anyone else here has this problem of buying things?

There are many people here afflicted with your condition... its called GAS. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome)
Im not a sufferer, myself, preferring to attempt a life of minimalism. I left 2 basses behind when I moved out of my exes (though I may go get one back at some point).

haha, MANY people have that issue. I phase in and out but am getting to the same place as Matticus (hopefully).

A good way to get away from it is to avoid personalizing the gear you have. As if it has a higher meaning or purpose in your life. This has allowed me to get rid of stuff easily if I don't need it.

I totally suck at it too.....just bought my...(counts on fingers...)...FIFTH bass. Holy crap! Yeah, five.

I know that's nothing to some of you....but I don't have a place to put them all.

I stopped buying stuff when I realised that I want to retire some day and I want to make a lot of money before that. You need money to make money, so I stopped spending it on bass stuff.

There is no known cure for this...keep buying stuff....

I go through phases with it. Might not buy something for a year or more, then bam... pedals, basses, whatever. A few months later, if I haven't used the stuff, I sell it. Most of the stuff I buy is cheap though.

I understand the GAS. My job is basically to sign up new MI vendors and pick out products to stock and promote. So all day every day I'm looking at bass gear, guitar gear, drum gear, recording gear etc. I play out 4-5 times per month so I can at least justify some of my purchases. But lately I've been falling in love with $4000 drum kits. I play guitar a little and bass primarily and drums never. There's a kit in my practice room that I never touch but still the only thing between me and a new Gretsch Brooklyn kit is my wife and my wallet.

Yep GAS can be a really pain in the arse...it always hits the hardest when you don't have that much money...at least for me. It's like it temps me to dig myself deeper into financial hell.

the desire for more stuff is not just a bassist phenomenon. the lust for more stuff is a common condition of mankind.

women with too many shoes or handbags (insert women and shopping generalization here)
men with too many toys
geeks having to always buy the latest/greatest technology
leaders amassing huge wealth while their people go hungry

bigger house, newer cars, nicer clothes, etc....

hence our massive debt problems.

Recognition is the first step in getting off this carousel.

I want to get off because I feel really bad after I buy someting.

My plan now is to buy used equipment only and sell it later. Atleast I can get my money back..

I once got a Zodiac birth year card that said something like "Your quest for material goods could be your downfall." ...it's true. I took it to heart. What you have here in this case is a short-term placation against either frustration or your worry about your impending future debt, and it does you no good.

Be rid of it, or justify having it.

the cure is to learn how to play music.
the elusive perfect sound doesn`t exist.
we only need so much in life to be happy.
sure i have bought and sold plenty of stuff this year, but it is not the norm for me; i feel like i now have what i need. i don`t particularly like the stress of buying and selling especially online.
i would rather be debt free and save my cash for those rainy days.
i have dear friends that buy/sell/hoard at an alarming rate, while neglecting other financial concerns (IMO); i cannot live that way.
