I'm not sure how many of you listen to the Dave Matthews Band, but I just can't get over how amazing the drummer, Carter Beauford is.
I've been listening to "Lie in Our Graves" non-stop for the past few days... the drum beat is just so friggin groovy!!! The whole band is pretty great, but man, he's just an animal on those drums!

| | | Meh I don't know. I don't really dig him that much. After watching a Victor Wooten video where he has to explain 8th notes by saying "Think of it like your name: Car-ter Beau-Ford" I kind of lost respect for him. |

The guy can obviously get the job done.
Thanks for sharing Basshole, I had never even heard of Dennis Chambers. He is absolutely incredible!!!!!!

No problem. My pleasure.
Best. Drummer. Ever.
(IMHO, of course)
I particularly love the part in that vid where he literally "sweeps" the kit with one hand. INSANE. |

I've taken 3 years of music theory, and I agree that it's weird he wouldn't know what they're called or "what they are", but to me his playing speaks for itself.

Edit: Dennis Chambers can't read music by the way. That doesn't seem to stop him from getting gigs. |

I get that a bit from Dennis, but Carter is the man! Do you find DMB in general to be "cold"? I think they have a great sound (though the songwriting sometimes is another story). |

While I respect the apparent skill the man possesses, his playing has turned me off of more than one DMB song.
It's like a groove is building and then, from out of nowhere, there are all these syncopated hits and rhythmic displacement that destroys the groove.
I've heard him keep it reigned in a little bit on some tunes and it is quite enjoyable ("Don't Drink the Water", "Where Are You Going").

80% of the time Carter is the most eggriegeous overplayer on any instrument I've ever heard. It works in DMB I suppose. He can play a straight beat, he's done it on albums, and can be great at it. He's the Neil Peart of his generation, influencing flamboyant overplayers everywhere.
I'd take Steve Gadd over any drummer mentioned here. Chad Wackerman is another favorite of mine. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
