I'm not sure how many of you listen to the Dave Matthews Band, but I just can't get over how amazing the drummer, Carter Beauford is.

I've been listening to "Lie in Our Graves" non-stop for the past few days... the drum beat is just so friggin groovy!!! The whole band is pretty great, but man, he's just an animal on those drums!

He's close friends with Victor Wooten as well.

Meh I don't know. I don't really dig him that much. After watching a Victor Wooten video where he has to explain 8th notes by saying "Think of it like your name: Car-ter Beau-Ford" I kind of lost respect for him.

I don't see why that would cause you to lose respect for him. The guy can obviously get the job done.

Thanks for sharing Basshole, I had never even heard of Dennis Chambers. He is absolutely incredible!!!!!!

No problem. My pleasure.

Best. Drummer. Ever.

(IMHO, of course)

I particularly love the part in that vid where he literally "sweeps" the kit with one hand. INSANE.

He does know how to play 8th notes. Maybe he didn't know what they were called, which yeah, is a bit weird, but he can definitely play them.

I've taken 3 years of music theory, and I agree that it's weird he wouldn't know what they're called or "what they are", but to me his playing speaks for itself.

Actually, I know a number of LEGENDS in music that can't read a note, and know literally NO theory (well, they know it...but not in the school sense).

Exactly! That's pretty much what I was saying. You don't need any of that stuff.

Dennis is GOD.
I find Dennis Chambers to be too damn loud. He is amazing when he tones it down though, and is absolutely ridiculous (good) with brushes. Have you heard the Steve Khan recording Crossings? On the last tune he KILLS IT with the brushes.

Edit: Dennis Chambers can't read music by the way. That doesn't seem to stop him from getting gigs.

I agree with you there! He reminds me of how Billy Cobham used to be with the Mahavishnu Orchestra, so full of passion and fire. I'm sure he'd appreciate that compliment! Yep, Dennis is a legendary player, I love him! His work with Bunny Brunel and Tony MacAlpine on the CAB albums is amazing, particularly the first record.

Dennis Chambers doesn't read a note of music. Hasn't stopped him though...

Weird. I get that a bit from Dennis, but Carter is the man! Do you find DMB in general to be "cold"? I think they have a great sound (though the songwriting sometimes is another story).

I'm right there with you on this one. While I respect the apparent skill the man possesses, his playing has turned me off of more than one DMB song.

It's like a groove is building and then, from out of nowhere, there are all these syncopated hits and rhythmic displacement that destroys the groove.

I've heard him keep it reigned in a little bit on some tunes and it is quite enjoyable ("Don't Drink the Water", "Where Are You Going").

+1

80% of the time Carter is the most eggriegeous overplayer on any instrument I've ever heard. It works in DMB I suppose. He can play a straight beat, he's done it on albums, and can be great at it. He's the Neil Peart of his generation, influencing flamboyant overplayers everywhere.

I'd take Steve Gadd over any drummer mentioned here. Chad Wackerman is another favorite of mine.
