Cello taking on Vocal Melodies?

I've been checking out 2CELLOS on youtube lately and a buddy said he wasn't a fan of their take on Purple Haze. He said the vocal melodies didn't sound right on the cello.

It kind of sparked a discussion about whether or not a cello (or any instrument) can match a vocalist's take on notes and melodies. Singers seem very in control of their notes and seem like they can really flow through their lines with ease and smoothness.

So the question is, can a cello player (or any instrument musician) take a vocal melody (no matter how complex or simple) and play it out just as well, just as smooth? or will there always be something missing in turns of smoothness?

Hi.

I think Apocalyptica does (or did ;)) quite fair job.

So my answer is yes.

Sam
