Cheap Tele Recommendation - SX any good?

Have a close friend (long time bass player) who has been fighting illness and has expressed some interest in playing electric guitar again.
Thought I'd buy him a Tele copy.
Are the SX guitars as good as the basses?
Anything else to consider besides a Squire?

Check out a G&L Tribute ASAT. The Tribute line is made overseas but they will probably cost more than an SX or a Squire.
Used ones can be very reasonable.

I have an SX strat and it's good for the money, just like the basses. I thought it even sounded better than my basses sounded, though its hard to compare apples to oranges.

Have a look at the Xavier guitar on the Guitar Fetish site - they're getting a lot of interest at that pricepoint ($169).
