Checking eBay serial #'s

Sign in to disble this ad
How exactly would I go about checking serial numbers given for basses on ebay? I did some googling for a bass I may end up buying, but found nothing. Does anyone know of any sites that index serial numbers for basses? I know it's a long shot, but, hey, it's worth a shot.

Contact the manufacturer with the serial number. They should be able to help you out.

You want to find a website that lists every serial number on every bass ever made? Why? What for?

Or just a stolen bass registry?

you'd think...

You've obviously not tried this. Guitar/bass manufactures are NOTORIOUSLY bad at keeping track.

they change systems, leave gaps, intruments get sent back for refurb and get renumbered, necks with one serial number get put on bodies from a completly different era, R&D parts end up getting put on instruments years later, a new neck gets made for an old instrument, and is stamped with the old serial number (then put on a new body!) - just about EVERY possible mix up you can imagine seems to happen. The company changes hands, they "loose" the records. Thats before you get into deliberatly misleading sellers who try and make instruments appear more attractive by messing with the numbers.

Pretty much everything I've ever read about serial numbers for a whole load of different manucturers has always begun: " brand XXXX serial numbering is rather complex and less conclusive than you'd expect".

What brand are you talking about?

Rickenbacker. I wouldn't be so paranoid about checking, but just last night I got an auction of a fake rickenbacker taken down. The seller admitted to it being fake in answering a question. I immediately reported him. I'm pretty sure he didn't list the serial number, though.
