I've got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell.

I'll go with cowbell, since the audience is less likely to cowbell along with their horrid timing than they are to clap along. Just watch out for the guy who snuck a cowbell in.

Clapping. It has more dynamic range than cowbell. But I will admit that the opening to "Mississippi Queen" is far less dramatic with just clapping.

OMG I HATE IT WHEN THE AUDIENCE CLAPS. It's like they purposefully try to throw you off, as a test, or they think the song is in like 9/8...

I think we can all agree that an audience full of cowbell would be horrific.

Clapping vs. cowbell

Tsk, tsk... why do you argue about one or another when you can have both?

(I'd be the winner if this was a contest )

All good songs must have either claps or cowbell in it.

Great songs have both.

Perhaps you could get a hi-hat-style cowbell stand. Who needs the drummer for.. more cowbell, baby!

+1

I saw Wynton Marsalis in Montreal about a month ago, and during one song, Wynton and the band start clapping. But not in unison, like one dude in half notes, another in triplets, and another doing some syncopated stuff. And the crowds starts clapping

Obviously, a room full of whites can't ever figure out which guy to follow clapping, so everybody's just clapping along mindlessly, with complete disregard for rythmic consistency. (where's the "slapping forehead smiley" when you need him)

And THEN, after the show, some wise-a$$ is telling his friends that, quote: "The handclapping number was terrible, the band members weren't even clapping together"

Does humanity even have a chance?

This would not have happened with cowbell.
I am Phil Mastro, and I approve cowbell.

Whenever I hear cowbell I think of that Will Ferrel sketch from SNL. Friggin hilarious.

Get the Best of Will Ferrel SNL DVD's. Gold. Absolute carrots.
