So, Fender's Custom Shop Tribute to Clapton's "Blackie" has an MSRP (street price hasn't been listed, yet) of $24,000... www.fender.com/blackie
and Jaco's tribute has an MSRP of $4,328, with a street price of around $3,000, new. ... You know, I'm not sure if we should feel insulted, or glad that one of the bass communities' greatest hero's replica goes for a relatively reasonable rate.
Opinions?
EDIT: Spelling mistake.

There was a full page ad in the current Rolling Stone - that had to cost them a few bucks as well.
GC's minimum price will be $20,000.
The real payoff could well be that folks will go to the stores that have one on display. More people in the stores during the holiday season - more sales.
This is really a no-lose for GC - as I imagine they could get something close to what they paid for it should they ever want to sell.

Guitarists have a choice - a new Eric Clapton Custom Shop Signature Blackie is $2,049 at MF or the limited edition relic pre-worn with cigarette burns for $20,000.
It will be interesting to see if they sell them all at that price.
A friend of mine has owned the $2,000 one for awhile now. I think he made the right decision to save $18,000 by putting his own mojo into it.

Now I'm actually wondering why the Clapton signature guitar goes for LESS than the Jaco bass. I mean, compare the number of people who have heard of each. For example (my usual test): my mother has heard of Clapton. Jaco, not so much. |

The $20,000 + limited edition relic
The $2,000 custom shop
The $1,400 MIA - this is the one my friend has; not the custom shop one as I said in my previous post.
The difference in price between the Jaco CS and EC CS may be partly in the extra work to make the Jaco a relic. The $2,000 custom shop Clapton is not distressed.
The lesser popularity may also have something (probably not much, tho') to do with it - I am not sure what the economies of scale are at the Custom Shop level, but I would guess they probably have made more Clapton Strats than Jaco Jazzes.

Plus since GC now owns the original Blackie, they have a better story line to sell to the collectibles crowd - "It has the exact same dents, worn paint, and headstock burns as EC's!".
Jumbotron and I are also trying to puzzle out why the Jaco Custom Shop Tribute actually costs more than the Eric Clapton Custom Artist Strat. The big difference that I see is the cost of distressing the Jaco Jazz and maybe they have to do more work on the neck.
