Clarinet in Acid Jazz.

I know someone's gonna be all and suggest I just pick up Sax or something, but I rather like the 'stick' and was wondering if there's any hope for something as original as a smooth/Acid jazz band with some clarinet leads. I'm terribly interested in learning the clarinet but I'm not sure if it has a future in the music I enjoy and how I can use it effectively without looking like a dweeb ?

Smooth Acid Jazz. I guess there's no harm in trying.
