Clicking Finger Joint

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,
I'm 15 and have been playing guitar and bass for 3 years, of which I have never realized any problems with my fingers. But as of a few weeks the top joint ( furthest from the knuckle ) of my ring finger on my left hand has been clicking quite loudly and sometimes sticking in a certain position, where it will under pressure click back 'into place'.
It is not painful but the clicking is very annoying and I am concerned whether it may be the cartilage and thus could lead to athritis or loss of mobility within the joint. As I play guitar daily this would be disasterous to me.
Any help greatly appreciated, regards
Morgan

Sorry to hear about that. I had the same the same problem on the same finger only the middle joint. It is called "trigger finger" It can be repaired. See your doctor and get it fixed before it gets to bad, I waited and waited untill I could not even use it. It has been eight years sense I had the operation and it has been great. It is a out patient operation. You will not be able to use that hand for a about 3-4 weeks. Just work on your right hand technique. Good luck.

i used to get a click in my pinking on my fretting hand & it used to lock up a bit too.
every time i straightened the pinky out & tried to bring it back to playing positions it locked up & clicked terribly. i think the pinky has a bit of a problem but bad tecnique really brought it out. so i found a way to position my my pinky so it would not do it anymore, always keeping it slightly curved.

i also have a similar problem in my plucking forearm where if i play traditional 2 finger style my forearm becomes inflamed & & i can feel the tendons resistance to movement. so now i switch between traditional 2 finger style & a hybrid of DiPiazza/matt garrison approach. the economy of motion is key. i can push out notes fast & with very little fatigue.
