When i see people talk about Cliff on this board, they usually attest his skill to either Anesthesia or Orion. So I'm curious, what do you think his best display of skill? If you select other say what it is.
I gotta go with anesthesia, i know i know its harder to be musical than it is too be fast blah blah blah, but im young and foolish and playing like that really impresses me. What about you? |

He has a little solo chunk in the beginning of "Call of Ktulu" but it's almost impossible to hear it. I have the book though, and it sounds pretty damn good when I play it.
But as for the best "display of skill", I'd have to go with Orion. Anesthesia is faster and has a wider variety of techniques, but Orion is much more beautiful of a song. His solo is freakin' gorgeus and better then Anesthesia IMO. I love Anesthesia too, but this Orion just sounds better to me, especially the way Cliff and the guitars work together toward the end.

A lot of people make a point of "well, you can't judge to harshly, it's one of the first metal bass solos." I refuse to give "cred" on stuff like that... I close my eyes and think, "Does this sound good"... and if the answer is no, I don't care who they are.
Orion's "guitar" bass solo is actually pretty damn cool though.

Ride the Lightning has some awesome bass work under the slow guitar break leading into the solo, very catchy and neat even if its highly buried. Fade to Black has a very simple but extremely effective bassline, with some cool fills under the outro solo (check the live version on Cliff em All). Creeping Death is another of my favorites (again check the live version if possible, Cliff is less buried).

(honorable mention: beginning of Leper Messiah) |

Some people shouldn't be allowed to post here if all they're going to do is make comments that some people don't want to hear and may take offence too. Personally, say something relevant or shut up.
I wonder how some people would like it if something like that happened to someone they cared for and then someone said, "It was the best thing he ever did."
By the way, I voted for Orion.

There is nothing overly musical about it... it's not well written. A bunch of crap thrown together, not all that well composed.
