Closet bass player?

We've all likely seen closet guitarists who play bass, but secretly want to be a good guitarist. So they basically play the bass like a guitar, right?

Well what do you make of this:

I see no reason to say he's a closet bass player. Slapping a guitar, IMO and IME is much different than a bass.

I know, I was somewhat making a joke. But that's the first I've ever seen anybody slap a guitar and not sound like crap.

A band that used to be around here back in the late '80's- early '90's called Ten Hands had the first guitarist I ever saw do slap on a guitar. He would move his strap up to a different hole, shortening it, and just kind of dig in.

He didn't do any really wild patterns, but maybe that restraint was part of why it was good.

Well, sounds pretty good to me. I think B2B's comment on restraint nails my take on slapping. I just picked up a Marcus Miller CD and came away pretty bored by the end of it. After awhile it all started sounding the same, and the few tracks where he limited the slapping/popping were some of the best on the album. IMHO, of course.

And that was a women, wasn't it?

It's a guy. Saw another video of him.
Cool slapping video.

Meh, I'll refrain from commenting on the original vid, but there's a vid of Tomo Fujita here where he slaps on the guitar a bit (he's more or less a jazz/fusion/blues player):

Definitely different stylistically so ymmv.

Oh, and Charlie Hunter may qualify too :
