They're certainly corny enough to be black metal, but they don't seem to take themselves seriously enough to be Black metal either. That and the fact that they don't sound like black metal.

The only song I really like by them is their cover of "She is beautiful".

Children of Bodom is actually considered Melodic Black Metal, and yes they kick ass.

No, they aren't.

They are power metal with harsh vocals. No black metal bands play covers of Britney Spears or crappy bands like Poison.

Black metal is the exact opposite of power metal

I think the established genre is "death metal", with other bands like In Flames etc. But, who cares what someone labels it: if you like screaming guitars, fast riffs and throat-wrecking vocals, go for it.

I don't listen to COB, but I've never heard of anyone calling them anything but power metal.

No matter what message board I'm on, people insist on arguing over what sub-genre of metal certain bands fall under. Just listen to their music and forget about it.

I've most often heard them regarded as melodic death metal. Black metal is almost always anti-religious, heathen, isolationist, pagan or some combo of these themes– plus, trebly production, REALLY hoarse vocals...yeah. COB's lyrics are about internal conflicts and anger and stuff. And +10 to the point regarding the hair metal covers.

OK Immortal is black metal 1st wave. Children of Bodom is also black metal, but they are MELODIC BLACK METAL, that is why their music is not considered black metal, by people who view Immortal as the entire black metal scene. COB falls into the type of black metal played by bands like Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, and Moonspell.

Power Metal is stuff like DIO, Manowar, Dragonforce ect. The diference is in the lyrics.

Dragonforce lyrics:
Where Dragons Rule

Full the moon and midnight sky
Through the dark they ride
Warriors of forever will sacrifice the night

One for all and all for one
The future time has come
Faces filled with torment
Your heart beats like a drum

Never will you look back again
You'll fight on 'til the end
Together we will live on
Forever more...

In this land we have defended from all things dark and cruel
Now we are defenseless in a land where dragons rule

In this land we have defended from all things dark and cruel
Now we are defenseless in a land where dragons rule

Flash of steel in the mid-day sun
The battle has begun
Blood spills all around us but still we carry on

No mercy we will show to them
The white flag shall be raised
We'll fight for our freedom
Ride towards this evil place

We all stand until the end allegiance to this game

In this land we've defended from all things dark and cruel
Now we're defenseless in a land where dragons rule

In this land we've defended from all things dark and cruel
Now we're defenseless in a land where dragons rule

Sun set in the western sky
The battle's almost done
The victory will be glorious
Our enemies are gone

We all stand until the end allegiance to this game

In this land we've defended from all things dark and cruel
Now we're defenseless in a land where dragons rule

In this land we've defended from all things dark and cruel
Now we're defenseless in a land where dragons rule

[Solo]

In this land we've defended from all things dark and cruel
Now we're defenseless in a land where dragons rule [3x]

This is Power metal because the lyrics speak about mythical things, such as dragons and war. It is the mythical element that makes Dragonforce a power metal band.

Children of Bodom Lyrics:

EVERY TIME I DIE

The faint blaze of the candle of my life,
slowly dying like a fire in a pouring rain.
No sparks of hope inside,
no shooting stars on my sky.
On broken wings, no flying high...

Another night, another demise,
Cadaverous wind blowing cold as ice...
I`ll let the wind blow out the light
cause its gets more painful every time I die.

Out of strength to fight.
I cannot take another night.
I cannot take it no more.
Lust of light slips through my fingers
like blood on my arms.
Black candle wax has buried me...

Another night, another demise,
Cadaverous wind blowing cold as ice...
I`ll let the wind blow out the light
cause its gets more painful every time I die.

Notice that this song has much darker subject matter. Granted it doesn't not speak about anti-christian stuff, or satan, but Neither does Immortal. This is a lighter form of black metal more focused on Melody thus it is called MELODIC BLACK METAL. Also note that Dragonforce has a much cleaner vocal style than Children of Bodom this is also a charectoristic that seperates the diferent genres.
------------------------------------------------------------

Secondly Black Metal has an entirely Diferent Image than power metal.

This is a Dragonforce video:http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...&q=dragonforce

Notice that the imagery is not sinister or anything, thus it is not black metal.

Where as this video by Children of Bodom:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjZpqgeiGFQ is clearly much darker.

Hope that clears things up for yalls.
