My ex-GF used to listen to that sh!t. I hate her, I hate them.
One song she played me of theirs came just slightly shy of not completely sucking... |

Anyway, I agree with xcental34x, nothing is the 'exact same stuff', but it's going to be similar, otherwise there's no continuity in a band's 'sound' It's like car manufacturers having a common styling look over their models.

Maybe most of the time, but I wouldn't mind having come up with the line for White Shadows on X&Y (and Chris Martin probally would't mind having come up with the chorus... but Prince did). The bassline for Clocks works well too, I think.

Obviously just about all of mainstream music is boring... |

but changing their sound does not mean theres no continuinity, look at prince, john mayer, rhcp...their albums are mildly-considerably different from one to the next wether style or if their just evolving as a artist/group but they still manage to have their "sound"

Obviously just about all of mainstream music is boring... | Yup - I would certainly agree with your last statement - and maybe with your first!
But basslines don't have to be like that even in mainstream pop - so the Maroon 5 recent hit, had a nice funky bassy line; some of Travis's hits had interesting basslines - listen to "Side".
I was listrening to an oldies station at the weekend and they played the Doobies' "China Grove " and it has a great bassline!! How about "Hit me with your rhythm stick " - which is being used on a TV advert currently - great bassline!!
Most mainstream music is dull and boring - musically speaking - but if you listen more actively you can find some great stuff!!

You said it with Travis, some of them had interesting basslines. Sometimes it shouldn't stand out.
Just like that, there are some good lines in Coldplay (White Shadows, as carl-anton said, but again, some lines take a back seat.
Every one to themselves though. If a bassline doesn't hit me immediately (or even ever), I don't rule it out as a good song. Equally, if it's got a technically good line, the overall effect could still be terrible. Good line and good song...bonus!
Though I like Coldplay, and do listen to it properly sometimes, I do tend to see it as more 'background' music. Maybe that's why some people don't like it, because it doesn't always stand out, but there are times when you want that. I know I do at least.
