College?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys, I'm still a young snapper in high school, but I've been getting increasingly interested in studying music in college. However, as bass guitar is that one instrument that kinda gets discriminated, my college research hasn't shown me much about it. i think i saw the words "bass guitar" maybe once, while every other instrument was mentioned ten or twenty times.

With all that said, I'm a bit curious about studying the bass in college, with private lessons, recitals, ensembles, and all that good stuff. Any professionals/students/etc wanna give me the lowdown on a music major with the bass guitar?

one thing that i do know is that i wouldn't just learn about the bass, but also about stuff like music history, as well as how to play the piano.

I'd look into the double bass there are probably more options in a wider variety of colleges for that and i would imagine would be pretty easy to transpose that knowledge to the "electric bass guitar" but having no training on the double bass i could just be talking out of my a$$

It depends on what college you want to go to, as every college has a different curriculum for music and music history. I'm sure you can find piano courses and most good schools have good music history classes (when I went to UCLA they offered specialized courses on Bach and Mozart to the Beatles and electronic dance music). Finding courses just on bass might prove difficult unless you go to a music school like Berklee and the like. It's not as common an instrument as piano.

If you want to study music in college, start to learn Double Bass ASAP. I think Berklee, Musicians Institute, University of Miami [unsure on this one], and Columbia College will be the primary schools that will allow you to study bass guitar...those are the ones that seem to stand out to me from when i did my college search.

It sounds like you want to major in music for the right reasons...I remember a quote from the Chair of Academic Music Studies at my old school "If you thought majoring in music in a conservatory meant practicing all the times and focusing entirely on performance, you chose the wrong major." I transferred out the next semester. For me, a music conservatory wasn't the best decision. I don't regret going there for awhile though-the program was great and I learned a ton, just wasn't right for me. I wanted bass lessons with college credit. So now I'm a Management major while playing gigs. Once I have more money, I'll start to take lessons again.

all the best.
