Hi everybody.
Just want to share with all of you that I've been asked to play electric upright bass with famous Salsa singer Henry Fiol. It's the first time in my life I'm going to play with an internationally renowned artist and I can't avoid to feel a bit nervous.
The gig will take place on Saturday, Oct. 10 and he's supposed to send the sheet music during this week. I hope I'll receive the material soon because, although I consider to have decent (not outstanding) sight reading skills, I want my performance to be as close to perfection as possible.
According to the guy who brings Mr. Fiol to my town, he's a very good friend of him and agreed to come for a relatively low payment just bringing his pianist and
tres player ("tresist"?). The rest of the band is being assembled here and Mr. Fiol said: "The baby bass is extremely important. No bass guitar allowed, and this baby must sound as in New York". I don't know how an EUB is suppossed to sound in New York, but I'll try to do my best to satisfy his expectations. I've already warned the manager about the need of a powerful amp, since my baby bass is very quiet-sounding (but it responds very well with a decent amp).
The only thing I regret is that I'm a big Salsa fan, but not of Henry Fiol's music. For my taste, his songs are very long, repetitive and in many cases dense.
Here's one of his most well known songs (the one I happen to like the most). Now, it would be a totally different story if I were going to play with
these guys. That would be THE Salsa gig for me.
Thanks for reading! I'll keep you posted about rehearsals and the actual gig.
