Commuting for love: How far to your rehearsal space?

How far do you drive to rehearsal? Are there other obstacles (besides gear & woodshedding) you willingly overcome to make music with others?

For myself, the most talented group I have found is a 28 mile drive...one way. They are good, have good listening skills, and are constantly improving. I am only doing a 'sit-in' gig for them so I don't mind much of the work involved. Still contemplating the commute = joining them full time.

Right now it's about 20 minutes. It's going to be 45 once my guitar player gets his studio done, but I'll still do it. We only practice once a week, anyway.

I probably drive 10 or 12 miles one way to practice.

I used to date a girl that lived 45 miles away. I'd drive up there on Friday night and come home Sunday evening. That was worthwhile.......

We practice in the warehouse of my business and that is 3.5 miles from my house but I am already there from working all day. I may have to make the commute if we do a Sunday thing. Before when we used a rented space I drove about 21 miles.
I like this much better. It is closer for three of the other four members. Our drummer has to drive further.

I drive from 11 Mile & Woodward Ave. Royal Oak to 22 & Gratiot. 28 miles.

They're good and they rehearse once a week. They gig about 1-2 times a month. I'd prefer to work a bit more...but that may come. It depends upon how you build these things.

Thats funny, I work in Royal Oak as a fireman, and I can't find anything close to me. Let me know if you want to give up the eastside gig. Where are you guys playing, maybe I'll come check you out. Also, there has been a guy posting for a bass player in your area quite frequently on CL, for a cover pop/rock band.

I drive about 15 miles, but it's a combination of urban streets and one of the most congested chunks of interstate around, so it usually takes about 40 minutes. With bad traffic on weekends, it can take well over an hour each way, which almost drove me to quit. But then the leader fired the guitarist whose work schedule dictated the weekend practices, so now it's not so bad.

One band I'm in practices 50-miles away (one way). Fortunately, they only rehearse on the weekends. It could easily be 2-hours one way during rush hour!

Probably me. I am actively looking for another gig. Kissing lotsa frogs.

One band I tried out for was a great group of folks but the guitar player was nearly invisible sound-wise. Yep, hard to believe. He commuted 2x as far as I did, to not be heard!
