Comp/limiter ,and feedback supressors.

I'm putting a pa system together, and I need to know if I really need a comp/limiter,and I'm also looking at a couple of feedback supressors, and wanted to know if anybody has had good results with them.I already have a DBX 160A that I used on bass years ago,and I'm considering the Peavey Feedback Ferret, and one other feedback device. Thanks folks!

You don't NEED a compressor, but they make a really big (if subtle) difference to vocals. Anyone serious about live sound would probably consider them essentail, but if you're starting out maybe they're something you can live with out for a short while until you've sorted other things out. Without knowing your budget, and other requirements its difficult to say how essential they'd be.

If everything else is in place, I'd consider a nice pre/compressor for lead vocals a good investment, as it makes the vocal sound much more polished and proffesional - less like a local band, and more like a pro, touring band.

Like I said in the thread,I have a dbx 160a ready to put in the rack,I just wasn't sure if it was really necessary. The entire system is in place,I'm just wanted to add a couple of things to the rack. Now,do I run it through the effects loop,or the main output?

There's no point in putting one in a loop, as you've still got the uncompressed signal going to mains.

I'd put one in the insert point on the lead vocal first. Ideally I'd have one on all the vocal insert points, so each mic gets compressed. A final compressor on the main output would tidy up the whole band sound. If you look in the racks of "real" PA systems they have a whole load of compressors all just tackling part of the job. Try it each way and see what works for you.

I'm sure someone else knows FAR more than I do on these things...
