How do you guys do it?

I know there are many ways of doin it, but I wanted to see what worked best for ya'll

Lyrics first? chords? melody? BASS line?

At least for my current song i'm workin on it's a lyrics first then melod then chords/ bass line.

Yes. I've done all of those. Frequently you could listen to one of my old songs and know which instrument I was holding when I got the inspiration for the song because it would have the most interesting part. As I added each part I would tend to simplify to avoid making it sound 'sonically crowded'.

Nowadays I mostly either come up with words first or with chordal patterns on my 12-string guitar.

The origin of my compositions is whatever inspires me at the time.

It may be the rhythm of something mechanical around me giving me a beat, or the words on a page cutting through to a deeper truth, or maybe I just like the sound of something my fingers create on my bass.

I generally try not to force it. The songs come to me when they come. I just try and capture them as best I can.
