Computer Speakers??

What are you using for computer speakers?

If your computer is a desk-tower type .....which mine is...

Right now I have some old JBL "Platinums" that came with my now-deceased Compaq

They sound ok....but not all that great for music

Was thinking of making a slight upgrade to speakers that sound better for music off YoutUbe etc...

Good enough that I can jam along with on my small practise amp (bass)

I love the Maxxbass 102 for this use. No sub needed. I have thought of using it with my home stereo and/or my TV, but we have a flat and it would make our upstairs landlord unhappy with the 'perceived bass' it creates.

I've never found anything that compares with the M-Audio AV 40's: $150 from most online suppliers.

I actually have the 5" model (because they were $150 closeouts from the last time they updated the model; now they are $300 again), while my daughter has the 4" ones shown above. I was surprised to discover that I didn't like the sound of the 5" ones any better, and the 4" ones cost 1/2 as much, have far more IO flexibility, and take up less space on your desk. Knowing what I know now, for the same money, I'd get the 4", and at 1/2 the cost, they're a steal. Even the 3" ones (for $100) kill anything I've heard in their price range.

I don't always hook up my computer to speakers but when I do, I prefer my Carvin PM10A powered PA speakers.

I have a pair of Rokit KRK-6's that I use for other stuff

(powered monitors)

I didn't know they could be hooked up to the back of the computer........

I only have one small plugin for speakers on the back of the tower......

You just need a cable that converts 1/8" stereo to however your Rokits get their signal (RCA, XLR, 1/4", etc). My Carvins have the added bonus of being able to plug a bass straight into them.

A pair of JBL LSR2325P 5 inch monitors and a JBL LSR2310SP Subwoofer. Connected to the computer with a Roland Quad-Capture Interface.

I used to have really nice Altec Lansings in the early 90s back when they were actually good speakers, then some really nice Klipsch system. These JBLs are, however, the best computer dedicated speakers I have ever had. The bonus thing is that I can just connect my bass to the Quad Capture interface and play directly into the monitors in Stereo when I want to.

Ya, you just need a cable like elgecko says. Rock the Rokits. They will Rock It.

(actually, if you run your computer speakers at really low levels, you'll have to see how good the Rokits sound at that level, but if you're turning it up at all, there's no question that they will sound great)

I believe the KRK's unbalanced input is RCA, so you just need one of these:

The only disadvantage to your KRK's is their size, as they have a 9" x 11" footprint. If your computer is somewhere you can do so, then putting them on stands will free up desktop space. Their advantage is, of course, that you already have them and they can give you some great sound.

It depends on what you use your computer for, doesn't it?

I end up with a fair amount of multi-track practice and demos to mix down, so spending a couple hundred on a halfway decent 'prosumer' level set of powered monitors was a good idea. They're also great to hear clips and such as posted online since they're fairly clean and precise, but not what I'd use for pleasure listening.
