Concert Advice

Sign in to disble this ad
Next year, I will be saving for a new car, so I will be avoiding too much extra spending. I do want to check out some nice concert though. I know a local jazz club will be featuring Christian McBride and the Yellowjackets next February and March repsectively. Which concert should I see? I am a fan of Jimmy Haslip and Christian McBride. Stanley Clarke and Hiromi are coming too, but I have seen Clarke three times already.

Sorry to say it Dr. Cheese, but if I were you I'd go see Stanley again.
My 2 cents,
Dirk

I'm sure the Clarke show will be good, but I want to see some other great players too. Since I don't play acoustic, I'm leaning towards the Yellowjackets and Jimmy Haslip.

I saw the Yellowjackets years ago. It was a great show. Pretty much all I can tell you.

Have one less dinner out, and see both

Having seen the YellowJackets many times, and Christian McBride twice now, if you are looking for a 'bass experience', it would be Christian by a wide margin. He is just a scary, scary player on DB and EB. He is truly amazing.

Of course, Jimmy Haslip is a classic also, but Christian is from another planet. To see him playing that fretless six string PERFECTLY in tune at blazing speed in the upper register is worth the price of admission, and his DB playing is amazing.

If, by chance, the McBride concert has Brian Blade on drums, then it becomes a complete no brainer... you will NEVER forget the first time you see Brian live... no one else like him.

IMO!

I will echo everything Ken said, and then apply all of his comments about Christian to Hiromi as well(but on piano, of course). She is absolutely out of control good!!!(Tony Grey is no slouch either)

I would check out Christian and Hiromi.

Hiromi will be with the Stanley Clarke Band, not her band.

KJung, you are so sensible! I know Reggie Thomas, a monster keyboardist and music professor at my school, tried to get me out to see McBride about two years ago, but I couldn't make it. I know his Live at the Tonic CD is killer. It would be great to see both.

Since I was born in February, I guess I could make the concerts my birthday presents.

I would bet Reggie would dig Christian. Reggie is a killer player. While I've gigged with Rick many times (Reggie's guitar partner in crime), I've never done a gig with Reggie. He is killer, and can kick some bass on the B3 also!

You know, the YellowJackets are still fabulous, and I hate to say it, but they are starting to sound a little tired. The tone of the keys and bass, the compositions, and ever since Will Kennedy left, there is a certain 'something' that band had that is just gone (even thought their current drummer.. forgot his name... another St. Louis cat... is smokin').

Seeing the YellowJackets now is a bit of an 'oldies' show to me. McBride, Brian Blade, Kenny Garrett... that whole crew... sounds TOTALLY fresh and inspired to me.

Pure IMO there.

I'm seeing Herbie with Vinnie and Pino Pallidino subbing for the injured Tal Wilkenfeld next week at a nice outside venue in Detroit (supporting the wonderful 'Imagine Project' pop CD). That should be fun!

Reggie can also play bass guitar when he wants to. Once in a music store, he was showing me licks he copped off of Richard Bona at a festival in Senegal before Bona got big in the USA. He tried to get the Bistro to book him back then, but they balked. As Reggie said, they would have to pay real money to get him now!
