first a word of caution, turn down your speakers!

secondly, a word of caution, turn down your speakers a little more!!!!

i saw this on the music thing blog today, and thought this was pretty cool, and maybe some people at talkbass might dig it

A guy tips a load of rice over a panel which is vibrating at various audio frequencies. The rice arranges itself into patterns depending on the frequency.

i thought it was really cool

Cool. The rice bounces around until it lands on a node and then stays there. I did a similar experiment as an undergrad except that we used a laser to scan the surface. As a result we could see the whole pattern rather than just the nodes.

did you show it in realtime or something? that'd be a cool sight

We had a program that we could use to model the wave pattern on the surface. We didn't get to see so many patterns because the laser took a while to scan the surface and so it would have taken forever. We got a 3d map out of the amplitude vs x and y on the surface and then compared it with the model.

Awesome. I love physics. I love the theories and laws behind it and the cool things you can figure out with it.

Figured this one out right away.

If I only didn't hate math so much, I'd probably be a physicist of some sort.

I don't have any pics of the experiment. I did it nearly 5 years ago so I doubt I even have the data/write up anymore.

I'll try to check something else. I had an interesting paper where they used a very similar technique to the experiment that I did and they mapped the surface vibrations on a violin. It was very interesting.

Cool! So if i were to lay a black board on top of my amp and covered it in rice, and played continuous notes.... I know my bass doesn't have the range of that thing but think I would be able to get any patterns to form?
