COVER SONG STATISTICS

For those of you in cover bands…

I know that audience members will often come up and request something like crazy train twelve time or free bird etc, and then when you finally give in and play it… the audience interacts with little to NO participation…

On the other hand,

If you play (requested or not) Y. M. C. A., I will survive, Billie jean, brown-eyed girl, the joker, or keep your hands to yourself… you nearly create a riot of enthusiasm and audience participation!

(I am sure there regional comparisons etc…)

Ok, so…

I wanted to ask two questions…

#1 what are the cover songs you most often experience as REQUESTS weather they go over well (audience participation) or not?

And

#2 what cover songs create the biggest frenzy at your gigs?

I want to compare what people ask for, and what people ACTUALLY react to…

Firstly this is in the wrong section

Secondly, I think it depends on what band you're in. The title of the band I'm in gives it away at our gigs so we never get jumped on with people asking for 'Crazy Train' and 'Freebird'.

The requests we do get are usually 'Elvis/Kinks/Rolling Stones/Beatles/The Jam'. More often then not though we're aiming to do the song they request by the end of the night. There's two songs 'Ghosts' by The Jam and 'Broken Stones' by Paul Weller, that were requested and are now part of our line up.

The ones that create the biggest frenzy are the ones they really know and can dance too, these are the ones we normally stick in the second set but at some gigs the whole set can get them up dancing all night. Usually the best ones for us are: Jumping Jack Flash, Satisfation, Lazy Sunday Afternoon, Tin Soldier, David Watts, In The City, Start, Eton Rifles and Town Called Mallice.

One thing we have come to terms with, is that songs that go down well in some places wont go down so well in others. That's why it's always best to have a nice pick and mix of songs to go with, or try to remember what went down well the last time you played at that venue.

We get lots of requests for Surf Instrumental tunes since people know we do quite a few of them and they really like them but hardly ever dance to them. We also get a lot of requests for Eagles and we play Take It Easy and while people usually sing along and applaud, they hardly ever dance to that one either.

Here are some of the songs we play that instantly get people on the dancefloor

Another Brick In The Wall
Gimme Three Steps
Gimme All Your Lovin'
Abracadabra
Wipeout
Louie Louie
Mustang Sally
Should I Stay Or Should I Go
Fast As You
Jessie's Girl
867-5309 Jenny
Hanky Panky
Down On The Corner
Old Time Rock & Roll
Rock & Roll Music
Rockin' In The Free World
I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)
Summer Of '69
White Wedding
Life Is A Highway

My lord where do I begin lol

We usually get the whole "skynrd" request.... as such we now do Simple Man (with a twist... we go into the freebird solo at the end) and Sweet Home (wherever we are lol)... last dance w/ mary jane was also a popular request works well.... we also get a ton of chili peppers requests (which as soon as our new vocalist learns lyrics we'll be peachy keen)... we get tons and tons and tons of requests that have never seen the light of day as well lol.... I'll try to make more of a list this weekend with that

Songs that always end up good for us are:
867-5309
Living on a Prayer
Don't Stop Believing
Ain't No Sunshine
Sweet Child of Mine
Welcome to the Jungle
Killing in the Name
Enter Sandman
Hit Me w/ Your Best Shot
Summer of '69
Harder to Breathe
Sex and Candy
My Own Worst Enemy
Santeria
What I Got
Say It Ain't So
Zombie
I Love Rock N Roll
