Hopefully soon I'll find out how well Shakira's "Ojos Asi" goes over. She does it on tour, but few people can cover it because most of the lyrics are in Spanish and I think the rest is in Arabic. And then you have the sitar part and the violin solo...
So, that got me thinking. What's some material that crowds love, but few bands do because most can't pull it off? The kind of stuff you should definitely do if your band is one of the few who can make it sound right.
I'm guessing Barry White would be near the top of the list.

| | | | I would say there's quite a few songs not usually done by cover bands because they require an unconventional instrument, such as a sitar or violin. Although most unusual instruments can typically be covered by a guitar or keyboard, it's still a rare day when a cover band plays one of those songs. |

Sure, I'd love to have a cat on keys and sax, but we keep it a 4 piece to make more bread. I can't even remember the last time I heard a band do a SD song.

We used to do YYZ and Red Barchetta in practice when we were messing around but we never gigged those tunes because we only wanted to so the stuff that was popular on the radio. We also used to do some VH and Ozzy and such. Rush is challenging stuff to learn, but not impossible, it's just that it's not super popular in the general club-going public.
ETA: We didn't have a keyboard player, either, which limited the Rush tunes we could play. When we did need keys for a song, I got stuck with the job and the rythm guitarist would play bass, but he was winging it and couldn't do Geddy stuff, and I can't play 2 or 3 instruments at the same time like Geddy can, so that was pretty much that!

I'd love to do a SD cover/tribute/whatever band. Such great writing and so fun to play. |
