Covering Limelight
 

Hey guys!
Today I had a meeting with my friend's band who needed a bass player. We spent most of the time deciding on a song to play on stage for a school talent show and we all seemed to think Limelight by Rush is a good possibility. Everyone is pretty good at what they play and I have a good feeling about it. What do you guys think about this? Is there some reason to not play this song?

Not sure how big your school is, but an auditorium full of blown minds and kids exposed to some ACTUAL music would be the only reason I could think of...

While I do enjoy Rush, I would ask you what you and the band want out of this Talent Show? In short, know your audience/judges if you want to win - it may or may not be a Rush song that helps this to happen. If you want to kick some ass playing Rush and winning is secondary, play what you really want and kick some ass. (I'd do the latter.) :bassist:

Wow. If you and this band are good enough to actually pull off a reasonable cover of that song at your age, I'd say go for it. You're about 5 years ahead of the band I was in during my high school days.

If it's a legit "talent" show and you can pull that song off, you should win hands down.

OTOH if it's "who are the most popular kids playing the most popular song"... then it's not worth winning anyway.

Either way I'd say go for it.

The vocals are a little high, as long as you've got someone that can sing like that I'd say "Yes Indeed"

High School?

I don't know about anyone else here, but for high school kids to play a Rush tune at a talent show is pretty freakin' awesome in my book!

Keeping a classic like that alive through the generations makes me very proud of you.:bassist:

OMG - did "Limelight" at a High School talent show back in 1982! Takes me back to big Peavey speakers, a toilet-bowl sounding gym packed with students who couldn't hear anything, and endless black cords on the wood gym floor/basketball court.
No reason not to do "Limelight" then or now.

Thanks for the quick replies! We are just playing for fun and for the love of good music. It's not the kind of talent show that has judges and all that either. Do you guys suggest anything for improving the sound in a big auditorium? We want it to sound good. Once again thanks for the encouragement, I hope we can pull it off as good as the rest of you.

1984 or 85 I did Balls to the Wall by Accept in the HS talent show with - you guessed it - big Peavey speakers (and head)! And you couldn't hear much bass at all in the back. I was young and stupid and did the smiley-face EQ.

I wouldn't say I pulled it off all that well...:crying:

I hope there's a decent PA available. I tried to fill the auditorium with my rig when I did the talent show thing eons ago and it really didn't work so well. Send an FOH signal if you can.
