Hooray for hypothetical situations! Anyway, what songs covered by whatever band would, in your opinion, be awesome and provide a departure of sorts from the original? As much as this may not make sense, try to imagine how the song would sound covered by the band of your choice before you put it down. Anyone could say "Wouldn't it have been awesome if Charlie Parker played some Meshuggah?!" but it's kind of pointless if you yourself can't even begin to imagine what the product would be like. Don't worry if your band is broken up/dead/completely different genre this is just for kicks.

Hypothetical cover band - song title (original band)

Mine:

Dream Theater - Black Hole Sun (Soundgarden)
Queen - Black Hole Sun (Soundgarden)
Type O Negative - Black Hole Sun (Soundgarden)

I've been listening to this song ALL DAY LONG. I had always kind of liked it but when i heard Peter Frampton's version this morning, I was hooked. I've just been flipping back and forth between Frampton's and the original just listening to the song over and over... Frampton's is playing right now actually.

It sometimes cool to hear a song from one genre covered by an artist in a completely different genre. I recently saw Gov't Mule and they did Prince's "When Doves Cry" and it was phenomenal. It didn't really sound like Prince's version but I thought hearing their particular take on the song was pretty cool.

I guess the thing that makes that difficult to pull off is the potential for the covering artist to lose some cred in their particular milieu (you know, I think this is the first time in my life I've actually used that word. ). But assuming that fans would be open minded about it, how about something like :
- Megadeth doing Debbie Gibson's "Shake Your Love"
- Taylor Swift doing Joan Jett's "Bad Reputation", or better still, The Runaways "Cherry Bomb"
- Bootsy Collins doing "Rock and Roll All Night"
- Ted Nugent (Mr. hardcore right winger) doing a song from a hippie band, perhaps the Grateful Dead

But to be a little more serious, how about Iron Maiden doing a Queen song? Bruce Dickerson has an amazing voice that I'm sure could do justice to some of Freddie Mercury's best work. I never thought about that one before, but I thought a good way to do it would be to come up with two bands with singers who have big, unique voices and those two popped into my head.

Don Caballero - Money(Pink Floyd)
Explosions In The Sky - Silent Lucidity(Queensryche)
Tom Waits - Float On(Modest Mouse)
Om - Come to Daddy(Aphex Twin)

I was thinking Russian Circles - Echoes, but didn't want to put two PF covers on my list. Doesn't matter though, because Mars Volta - Echoes would be AMAZING. You win.

I had never heard of Russian Circles. I looked up on YouTube and listened to Micah and Carpe. That is some neat music! It sounds like they would do a mean cover of Echoes.
