Craigslist/Kijiji Deals - Tell me about your weirdest, worst and best experiences!!!!

I recently posted an ad to sell one of my high end basses on CL and recieved tons of response. Mostly lowballers, crazy trade offers, etc. So yesterday, I get an email from a guy that proposes a fair trade right off the bat and it is gear that I actually want/can use.

Anyways, the coolest part is that once I get on the phone with him to figure out the details, it turns out he is a pretty famous guy (in a hugely famous band) and he will soon be playing in front of 20,000 people in my town. I mention my kids love his music, and bam! 4 back stage passes for the concert! Turns out he is a great and down to earth guy.

In any case, the weirdest deal I did was when I sold a Sadowsky a couple of years ago on CL. I was asked to meet the buyer at a gas station late at night in the middle of nowhere. He shows up... in a big white Hummer and 4 HUGE guys get out and try out the bass. He slaps almost $2000 in hundred dollar bills in my hand and off he goes with the Sadowsky. I thought for sure I was going to take a bullet or get thumped out!

I haven't had any as extreme as those two cases, but I have had a couple of weird/cool CL deals.

One time I had a conga drum FS, and this one woman was hell-bent on buying it, but we just couldn't make our schedules match up at any kind of reasonable time. Turned out we were both night owls, and since my roommates were up late too, I had her come over at midnight! This was in a very sketchy neighborhood, too--I'm sure we were both kind of worried about exchanging a couple hundred bucks for a drum after midnight in this hood. Deal went fine though.

Another time, I was looking for a semi-rare pedal, and a TB'er from Poland PM'ed me to say he found one on CL in Texas. I emailed the Texas guy, and he sent me his phone number, and sounded legit when we spoke on the phone, so I decided to totally take a gamble. I sent him the money, and he sent me the pedal! I know I was basically asking to get ripped off, but I decided to have faith in my "honesty meter" over the phone, and the guy was indeed a square dealer.

What band was the guy in?

I had been looking for a new bass for almost two years and I could not find one that I was willing to buy. A friend emailed me with a listing of a Fender American made jazz bass but when I call it was already sold. That night I checked older listings and found a '75 Gibson ripper. The guy had no pictures. I emailed him and he sent me some photos of a tobacco burst ripper. Apparently he found the bass in Chicago a few years earlier, purchased it and brought it to Baltimore. He was selling it because it was collecting dust. When I went to meet him he only lived ten min away. The bass is all original and it is still in the original case. He even let me try it for a week before committing to the sale.

Not bass related, but I was on a huge home audio binge not too long ago and really wanted to upgrade from my crappy computer speakers to a decent receiver and speakers. I called a guy a about a great deal on an older Pioneer receiver, 4 very long sets of Monster cable, a 5 disc CD changer and an 11 band EQ. The guy worked out of a warehouse in Hunters Point in the south of San Francisco, and I had NO idea that this place was the ghetto and had an insanely rough history. So I drive out there and meet the guy at the very end of a long street, scared out of my mind and as it turns out he was one of the nicest guys I've met in a very long time. The transaction went fine and I got the hell out of there not quite knowing what to expect down the road, but it all turned out all right. Turns out that some of the equipment didn't work as described so I called him up and he happily returned some of my money for the stuff that didn't work! Was the best CL transaction I've ever had.
