Cueing the Drummer, or guitar player or....
Every band I have been in, I don't know if it's a bass thing or just me but the drummer's have always had to rely on me for important cues on tricky changes or ends of songs. Many times the guitar player would rely on me too. I always seem to be the only one sure of where we are all at in the song and it's always been that way.
The last band I was in was the least I was relied on but the drummer who was the best I ever played with had to get cues from me on a couple of parts but less then other situations. With the cover band I am working with not only am I cueing the drummer but also coaching him.
Is this common? Baby sitting your Drummer? Or Guitar player? If yes is it always the bass player or just me?
Amen, show's the importance of the bass player, lol
Yeah same. But I try n MAKE the drummers I work with do it. I tell em that I'll follow exactly, I'll watch their hits & be on that right there.
That's helped and in s couple of bands they've gotten the confidence to lead it into endings etc. But if songs aren't REALLY well known (by the drummer) they'll be looking to me for important changes, stops etc.
I think coz the bass is the 'bridge' between the rythym and melody instruments, we're looked upon to BE the leader in these areas.
It happens to me too but in my case is the singer I have to cue. This is important because we are a three piece band.
Our drummer knows all the songs but he is out of the country now and I'm the one responsible for showing the songs to the replacement drummer.
There are a lot of times were everyone is looking at me. It is nice to know you're needed but come on, they are grown men right?
I vote it's a bassist thing
I've had that role often too .. only I've played a lot more guitar than bass ;)
The guitarist does the cues in my trio since he also does the vocals and most of our songs are his originals. The drummer and I take the cue. It keeps it tight. We have played together long enough that collectively we know every little anticipation and dynamic.
