Current music scenes/hubs

I am sure this has been talked about and brought up before, however, when I searched I couldn't find anything. I want you to know my searching abilities are meager at best...

Anyway, I was thinking about where the bands that I really like came/come from. It seems like back in the late 70's adn early 80's, we had bands coming from just about everywhere. There weren't any massive scenes or hubs yet (minus the obvious NYC, LA...). But I mean, the Meat Puppets came from Phoenix, the Seattle thing eventually blew up, you had all those really great bands coming from Illinois and Minnesota and that area, Athens, GA, there were some solid bands from the Kansas area.

So that got me to thinking about music in its current form and where are the scenes or hubs where not only does there seem to be something going on, but also places where people are checking out music and meeting other musicians and so on.

I guess, it's like wether you're a musician or not, in the States, where would the audiophile go, the true music fan, the musician looking to network?

I mean, we know LA is still around, San Francisco?, NYC, Austin....

Speaking for LA, I think there is a lot of potential for good crazy stuff to come out of here again, though I think because the industry is here, right now, it's hurting. I was in Austin (briefly, admittedly) not that long ago and really wasn't impressed. Not to mention, most of the locals I talked to (perhaps bad locals?) said that Austin was only really cool when the fesitvals came through.

I have no idea. But I am very curious to see what people think and who people are listening to and what regions are making what sounds and what's happening, etc.

What do y'all good folks of talkbass think?

Are you asking this just out of curiosity? or are you thinking more along the lines as an active pursuit?
If you are looking to network,LA-Nashville-NYC remain the trinity.
Also take a look at the higher learning institutions for music,MI,Berklee,etc...
These are often overlooked, yet outstanding hubs for networking.
Are you near a College,or University that has a nationally recognized music program?

Everyones taste in music is subjective and a matter of personal preference. What style/genre do you like the most?

If you are wondering about something overall?
A short list would be Los Angeles,Nashville and New York City.
This is on current overall activity.
As always...follow the money.
And the charts.

Are you wondering more about local/smaller niche type scenes?...
Seems like the more things change...the more they stay the same.

Funny that whenever this subject comes up that Nashville,is rarely mentioned, even though that is the most active gold mine at this time.

Take a look at the highest grossing tours from 07' notice the numerous Nashville, connections?

Kinda cool that the Police, made such a massive Sting

Chicago and the surrounding area has everything and lots of it.

Blues, jazz, every kind of metal that exists, classical, traditional, folk, electronic, punk, Latin of all descriptions, pop, Euro-pop, Afro-pop, more dance and house music than you can believe, country and western (both kinds), rap, hip hop, gospel, show tunes, worship music, experimental music, and just plain rock and roll. . . and on and on and on. If there is a style of music that exists, you can go to see someone playing it somewhere around here.

Southern Ontario has a rather large emerging music scene.

No, this more of an interest thing. I live in LA now, so I already feel pretty okay in the pursuit aspect. But, every place has its pros and cons, you know?

Yea, I always thought college towns would be a good networking place, never did consider places that had big music schools. I have a friend in Nashville who loves it. He isn't doing much music at the moment, but as a city in general and all that's going on there, he said it's really groovy.

I like all sorts of things. Lately I have been listening to lots of Meat Puppets, Stockhausen and Butthole Surfers.

Are there a lot of smaller, niche scenes?

Thanks for all your info. everyone.
