Custom straps with egregious "Kanji" Options, buyer beware

Sign in to disble this ad

I was browsing through myspace profiles and came across someone who sells laser-etched custom straps. Naturally, as someone who can read and write Chinese script and Japanese Script, I took a peak and was disappointed by the awful translations. The characters were done poorly, and the phrases were unintelligible gibberish.

So before you go and get any sort of Asian script, be sure that you have a good buddy that knows the language.

P.S.

A majority of Chinese-Americans don't practice calligraphy, so you'll probably have to talk to their grandpas.

Thanks for the heads-up! There was a luthier, talked about here not long ago, who was inlaying kanji into the body or fretboard of his basses, and a lot of it was unintelligible or just not quite right. And of course it's endemic around tattoo shops, regrettably.

Tattoo's are awesome. You tell the guy "I want STEVEN" tattooed on my arm!", and instead they tattoo "gwai lo".

Of course, idiots don't even know that you can't get your name spelled in a language that doesn't have the pronunciations of your language. Katakana is as close as you get for Japanese, but it doesn't look Asian enough for some people.

People seriously need to think harder about the tattoos they get. And it really isn't that hard to use a X language/english dictionary.

I've always been intrigued by Chinese or Japanese script in tattoos or guitar straps, etc. I wonder if someone's tattoo they thought said "peace" or "love" actually translates to "No. 7 w/snow pea".

Katakana's usefullness is limited to simple words that can't be written In japanese...names? Forget about it, it just looks way too funny for me

oh and by the way, I shot off an email to them; apparently, they paid a vendor for those graphics...

Did they really think that they were fooling anyone ?

As of now, I still don't want my name done in Chinese Script, I don't trust the penmanship of tattoo artists.

You show a tattoo artist something that you have drawn out, and they can reproduce it quite accurately. Even the bad artists can do that.
