David Hungate

Was searching through youtube the other night for material for the band I play in and came across this video that amazed me. The tightness of TOTO in their day with bassist David Hungate brings back so many memories. His bass playing simplicity is so tasteful yet so technical. Would like to share this with you. Can you believe he is a top Nashville session player now!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4f6Rs...eature=related Never seen him given any credit on this website.

He's been a top session player for a rally long time. All the guys in Toto were.

Look up the Staples 'I'll Take You There'. When she talks to David, that's David Hungate. They turned a few second long groove played over and over into a fairly major hit based entirely (in my opinion) on the bass line. Go listen to it. I'll wait here.

See. Wasn't that worth it? And that was way before Toto. David was part of the Mussel Shoals Rhythm Section, the guys they mention in Sweet Home Alabama.

Nice video. Thanks for the link. As to your last sentence, I think maybe you've been clicking on the wrong threads my friend. He gets major props and is mentioned frequently. In fact, I wasn't aware of his total contribution to so many projects until I started paying attention to the TB forums.

Are you getting David Hungate mixed up with David Hood? Both "Davids" are terrific musicians, by the way.

Check out the outro to "99".
And "Harbor Lights" from Boz Scaggs' Silk Degrees.

SOO COOL!

Thanks for all the links guys. I have only been a TB member since 08, although I've been playing for 25 yrs. A lot of the guys are younger and I' sure they don't know of his accomplishments. I honestly have not seen his name mentioned before, but that is what I get for not researching his name. It is so cool how she is helping LiL David with the bass line. You guys are a library of knowledge, and I appreciate the information.

Much as I love TOTO, and David Hungate (not to mention Jeff Porcaro - the man was a genious), Bobby Kimball's voice is just nails on chalk board. Ugh! Particularly when he's just at the top of his range.

DAMMIT!!!

I swear I remembered that as David Hungate. That song was the first thing that jumped into my head when I read his name.

Yeah I always kind of wondered why Toto felt like they needed a front man. Lukather and Paich both sing plenty well on their own. It's not like most people who go to see Toto are there to see some big stage production, anyway.

You're absolutely right!

You hit the nail on the head Rune. The studio was very kind to Bobby Kimball. He continues to sing, or attempt to sing to this day. You heard him when his voice was still reasonably good. David Paich still kills me.

I like the comment on the author of the interview:
Quote:

(Noah Hungate is a gifted and insightful writer based in Nashville, TN. Said to be the son of a famous bassist with a world-wide reputation, we've narrowed it down to either Lee Sklar or Tony Levin.)
