I'm in Washington DC for the week. Any good music stores?
Thanks

By far the iconic institution you have to go visit is Chuck Levin's Washington Music Center. Largest independant MusicMan dealer, etc. etc. You can get there via metro rail ( Red Line heading to Glenmont) - it's in Wheaton, MD, right over the DC line. Now the place looks like a dump (because they've been in the same location for 50 years), and looks deceptively small, but...you gotta go there. A DC institution. The Bass guy there is Brian Meador - if you're looking for something in particular give him a call or email and he'll have it pulled for you if they have it (they have several offsite warehouses). They have a showroom for guitars and basses, but everything else is 'back room,' but they'll escort you back there. It's essentially the exact opposite of GC if you can imagine -a working professional's or "advanced amateur" paradise. http://www.chucklevins.com.
Another intersting shop is Jive Sound http://www.jivesound.com, which is mostly by appointment only - but a very neat spot also.

I bought 3 basses there in my timespan. They certainly do have some selections, also don't forget to ask for anything you don't see, they may have it. |

He's open Friday and Saturday evenings regularly, but I bet he'd work with you to come up with another time that would work for you if those don't (he's done it for me and for lots of other people). Jong's a great guy and he has lots of boutique gear... not the same quantity as Chuck Levin's, but the quality of the gear he stocks is top-notch. You'd be doing yourself a disservice by not at least contacting him and seeing if you can arrange a time.

Chris P. | Jivesound is the highlight. Chuck Levins is fantastic. Atomic Music is hit-or-miss.
If you have access to a car it's worth the drive to visit "Classic Axe" in Gainesville, VA. My local independant shop "Melodee Music" (Two locations - Sterling VA and Leesburg VA) is worth a look if you're in the NoVA area.

Like the like new Fodera Emperor Elite 5 that sold for $3500 a couple of years ago. Or my Marleaux JB Deluxe 5 that several people pretty much dismissed. I'd say most of the really cool basses don't make it to eBay IME.
You could always call first and ask for Matt, Lou or Trevor. |
