You pretty much play breakdowns all the time, or something like that. And a 6 string is good for when you need to follow the 7-string player who is downtuned to like F#.
I kid, I kid. It's mostly like any other sort of death metal. You can either follow the guitarist or not, whatever fits with your jams best.

I'm sick of listening metal players follow the guitarist(s) bat-blindly. Do something different. Play some contrapuntal melodies, for example. See if it works. Upload some stuff for us to hear, too!
