December's BP Mag - Best For Ages

Sign in to disble this ad
So I just got December's bass player mag from the shops.

Best Issue for ages.

Great Scott La Faro interview - kudos John Goldsby.
Great transcription (Waitresses - Christmas Wrapping).
Great funk lesson - more kudos to John Goldsby.

And I've barely opened the cover.

I know Johnathan Herrera sometimes pops in here - if you're reading this great work, the Mag is getting really good again. And by far the best bass player magazine out there.

Yep, as I posted elsewhere, I enjoyed the LaFaro article and the Bill Laswell feature. Two interesting guys that I've been curious about for years. That's why I'll be keeping my subscription.

I agree I think the Mag is the strongest it's ever been.

2 Weeks transcriptions in the last year.

A Fred Hammond one,

I learned who Alen Spenner was by name even though I've been listening to him for 25 years

The Jesus Lizard finally got a nod.

Gnawa music got and the Sintir got mentioned.

A Indian rhythmic solfege lesson.

AWESOME!!!!

If there is anything I'd like more of it would be stuff similar to Dale Titus's article's about inspiring creativity (Yes I've been reading had a script that long) That one stands out in my mind. Kinda silly, light, fun and yet actually really solid advice.

Thank You

It's really good this month.

I have always felt that the transcriptions alone makes this mag worth the cover price. This month, while the mag is "thin", the content itself is astounding. The Scott LaFaro story with related exercises is priceless!

Well done, Jonathan and staff!

PS - Bring back Ed Friedland, Dave LaRue, and Jeff Berlin as columnists. They, along with Goldsby, would create a "murderer's row" of instructors!

Hmmm...I wonder if BP has ever considered using 'past' Columns. The early issues had Chuck Rainey, Will Lee, & Anthony Jackson.
Dave Larue's Column, too, were extremely educational.

That would be very hip. The information in those columns never goes out of style, or gets stale. I am constantly referring back to my old issues when I get to a plateau in my playing.

The old lessons are published in "The Bass Player Book". An excellent resource. I can wait to check out the new issue.

Nice but was it still like 70 pages with 35 worth of advertising?

Hey, everybody's gotta pay the bills! The content on those 35 pages were worth the price of admission.
