Decent Bookshelf Speakers?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just recently came into posession of some of my late father's stereo system components. I now have a turntable and an amp/receiver, as well as a 5-disc CD player. I am now looking to get my hands on a decent pair of bookshelf speakers to go with this rig. What are some manufacturers/models I should be investigating? I'd like to keep the price under $250.00 (Canadian) for the pair. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Check out Bose:

The 201s, under $250

Bose 201

Or, for a few bucks more, the 301s:

I have both of the speakers mentioned in a surround sound system (301s in front, 201s in back). I think they're pretty good. I'd go out and listen, though. For the price range you're looking at, your best bet is probably to try brands at the "box stores" like Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. Maybe some Infinity or Polk speakers will grab you.

Canada is home to a number of excellent loudspeaker manufacturers, such as Energy and Paradigm. The Energy C2's and Pradigm Atoms sell for less than $300 US. I would recommend used speakers, if possible- much more for your money at that price point. Try Audiogon.com classifieds- you can even search in your local area.

I would say go to Best Buy or some similar store, and play with the little buttons that let you A/B different speaker setups. Let your ears be the judge, and keep the sales people away until it's time to pay for whatever it is you decide on.

Well these are over your price range, but for reference, check out Dynaudio Audience 42 if you can. Honestly, I never heard as much good sound in such a little speaker, definitely worth the money.
Especially if you are into more of hifi sort of music then pop/rap/etc. Especially vocals and acoustic guitar is nice with those.

Thanks to everyone for the replies here. I really appreciate them.

And, Headroom, you might be interested to know that I actually picked up a pair of Paradigm Atoms this afternoon. I saw an ad in the local rag alerting me to the ubiquitous Boxing Day Sale at one of the local audio shops, so I just had to go and have a look.

The only pair they had left for sale were the actual floor models. But, they offered them to me at a great discount (on top of the already killer price). Plus, being floor models, they've already been worked in. So, it's a great deal all around, I'd say.

I've hooked them up to my stereo here at home and they sound absolutely fantastic! I'm glad I got my hands on these. Once I clean the pots on my stereo receiver/power amp, this system will positively rule!

Thanks again for everyone's help.

If there's a hifi-magazine around, their for sale -section would be the place to find stuff, in the internet too.
