Decent gig bags in the UK?

Sign in to disble this ad
I live in the UK and the time has come for me to get a decent well padded gig bag, maybe a single or double, not sure yet.

Our friends over the pond have a big choice and some enviable deals from time to time. Over here we are not so blessed.

Any recommendations from us Brits as to a very well padded bag at not crazy money? I will use it with fairly standard basses like my Fender J and MM Sterling. Thanks, Bob

I've used one of these for about three years now and I've been very pleased with it. Much better than the cheaper Warwick bags - nicely padded, plenty of storage spaces and reasonably priced.

Thank you William, that was very quick!

I've just found the same bag at GAK.CO.UK for £25 including delivery, so I ordered one. I've spent nearly 40 years with hard cases but the local gigs that I'm playing now just dont need them, nor does my back!

Thanks again, Bob

That's a little odd - when I clicked the Google search link to that bag on GAK, it just took me to the home page instead. Oh well, nice find.

I switched from hard cases to this bag a while back, does the job for me. This reply I posted in another thread might interest you if you have any doubts.

The impact protection offered for an instrument is all about the degree of padding rather than the rigidity of the case material. F = (mv-mu)/t and all that (sorry for resorting to physics). In other words, an instrument would have much more chance of surviving a nasty drop in a well padded gig bag than it would in a poorly padded HSC. So, for those who always use a hard case and would never use a gig bag - don't drop it.

For the record, I used to be a hard shell case guy, but for a while now I've used a very nice, well padded gig bag. It's a lot more convenient and certainly no less protection (from knocks and bangs) than a hard case - possibly better, depending on the relative degrees of padding. Protection from crushing, however, does depend on rigidity. So, I would use a hard case if other people were packing my bass in a van and stacking cabs on top of it. I still have an SKB hard case (which is a bit flimsy) and a Hiscox case (which is at least twice as rigid as the SKB and way better constructed) if I need them, but I haven't needed to use either in a while.

Cheers Bill.

I think I've always been a bit of a softie, so I'm sure the new bag will be perfect

This might be a bit over what you're looking to spend, but it's definitely worth every penny.

Mono M80 Guitar Case Gig Bag (Electric/Bass) from Strings Direct

After my Ibby softcase decided to break while walking home one day and giving one of my basses a great dent/chip, i chose to buy something durable. So i ended up getting their dual bass softcases, and it's been a great decision.

Here's the features in more detail: :: MONO ::

Thanks guys. I will see how I get on with the Warwick. If gig bags become my thing my son, who also plays bass, will get the Warwick and I might go mad and get the Mono. I must say it looks fantastic!

OK, I just cancelled the order for the Warwick and placed one for the Mono.

Nothing much wrong with the Warwick, and thanks for the heads up Bill, but the Mono is just so damn perfect that carring basses worth over 1K I guess I wanted to be sure that I was doing the very best to keep them protected.

+1. If you're spending large sums of money on instruments, why skimp on protection? Some of my friends are shocked when they find out how much my iGig case was, but what's inside is worth a darn sight more!

The same as earplugs, my customs moulded ones were expensive, but my hearing is worth a lot more.

I'm afraid I can only fulfil one of your criteria here, but if you want a very well padded double gig bag with room to spare you could do a lot worse than an iGig double bag (Google for iGig G515D).

Top notch protection.

Protection Racket do excellent stuff. I got one of the first gig bags they did about seven years ago and it is still in great condition.

That looks like a really great bag. You get what you pay for I guess, at least in this case (no pun intended). It's five times the price! But it does look in another class altogether.

Just got my Mono bag and it looks good. I'm totally new to gig bags and I don't think I would be happy with a bag of lesser quality that the Mono. It's good, but I'm not blown away. If this is about as good as gig bags get then that's fine and I'm glad I got this one. Now let's see how it works out. Thanks for all the advice again, Bob

Just to update about my mono gig bag.

Two months on I LOVE IT. It took me a while to get used to a gig bag after decades of HSC's. It has now served me very well and am thinking about getting another for a second bass that I take to gigs just in case my Jazz lets me down.

Thanks for the heads up about the Mono guys, it is worth every penny.

Glad your enjoying it!
The double gig bag is great to if you ever need to carry 2 basses!

There are better gig bags than the Mono but they are a lot more expensive (considering the Mono is already pretty expensive compared to the average gig bag!)

I have a mono single, mono double and one of those and they are the best i have ever seen!
