Decibel, SPL, & Perceived Loudness???

I know that when you double the power you get an increase of 3db (i.e. 500w --> 1000w increases the loudness of the signal by 3db). I have been told that the 3db increase is at the early limits of what most humans can begin to hear a change. If this is the case why would you spend the extra money on a 1000w amp if it is only going to give you a barely perceivable increase in loudness. Our ears naturally attenuate lower frequencies so it would seem to me that this increase would be even more useless to bass players as we don't hear lower frequencies as well as we hear higher ones.

What are your thoughts?
