And other fans of Devin in here? Let's have a general discussion on him. What do you think of his work (especially his latest 4-album Devin Townsend Project)?

personally, I hated Ki, I thought it was just a bunch of bland noodling. Addicted was awesome though. He seems to be incorporating more electro-pop sounding stuff into a metal format, which I think sounds great.

Im a pretty huge Devvy fan myself. I thought Ki was good. Different from his usual stuff but its good chill out music. Then again, different is pretty much Devins how you'd describe most of his stuff. Have you had a listen to Devlab? now thats different haha

I love Hevy Devy. I only have Addicted by him, but I have all his SYL albums with the exception of Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing.

I absolutely LOVE Addicted. I purchased it not knowing what to expect, only having heard City by SYL, and was absolutely blown away. I'm still trying to track down Ki, but I am definitely excited for Ghost.

Definitely pick up Ocean Machine, Devlab, and Ziltoid the Omniscient as well. Synchestra is excellent as well, but I didn't really like Terria (with exception of the song Earth Day)

Huge, long-time Devin fan here. Going to see him in NYC in a couple of weeks.

Addicted is awesome (Supercrush is an amazing song), Ki was good (although if you've heard the Devlab stuff, him doing mellow stuff isn't unusual), but my all-time favourites are Terria (fantastic, atmospheric album) and SYL's City (redefined heavy music for me). One of the best gigs I ever saw was SYL supported by Zimmer's Hole and The Devin Townsend Band at the LA2 in London. Can't wait for Deconstruction and Ghost (the last two DTP albums) next year.

Saw Devin when he came down a few months back. Deadhead is an amazing song live. Just huge. Also met him at a signing in Sydney. We were the last ones in the three hour line and he was still really nice and polite. He got up out of his seat and introduced himself and thanked us for supporting him and his music. Really surprised me, I would have expected him to be totally over it by then, but he was so cool about it all.

The next night he was in Melbourne and performed a solo acoustic set at the meet and greet. A friend of mine went and watched it, apparently someone asked a question about the new album and he got so excited he pulled out his laptop and started playing his rough tracks, then grabbed his guitar and started playing and writing a song he had been working on. Would have been awesome to see

Also, Im jealous of anyone in the US and canada about now. Devin Townsend tour with Periphery and Tesseract. Wow.

Devin is pure Genius.

Ki, IMHO, is the absolute proof of that. A concept album in a contained environment, not the absolute freedom of his other records.

Clearly one of the best albums ever made.
Just because he's not thrashing, you can still feel the power and energy. Just listen to Disruptor and Coast.

It's so perfect! I can only thank Devin for such wonderful music.

I was there!!

A couple of years earlier he played the Highbury Garage, the gig was just billed as 'Devin Townsend' but it was in fact SYL - although they played plenty of songs from Infinity, OM and Physicist as well.

I've been fairly obsessed with DT ever since I heard 'City' at school when I was about 16. I pretty much love all his stuff, with the exception of Ziltoid which was a stinker of the highest order (Sorry Dev).

I remember when Addicted was released, I hated it, but persevered and about 3 or 4 listens later a little light bulb switched on in my head and suddenly I 'got' it.

I really tried! Some great music in there, but the comedy sections were just toe-curlingly awful. I'm sure Dev found it hilarious but it just sounded like a lot of it was written by a 14 year old.
That's the problem with comedy records, if you don't find it funny it doesn't matter how good the music is, it's just a difficult listen.

But hey, different strokes and all that! I'm on a Terria kick at the moment. I'm struggling to find any fault with it whatsoever. Utter sonic majesty.

My only beef with DT, or really with SYL was that I totalled my mom's car listening to SYL, and every time I hear Room 429 I have flashbacks of trying to use an Explorer to fell a 30" diameter white pine tree.

I love Devy. We hung out with him years back when they (SYL) were touring with Napalm Death and Kataklysm. What an amazing show. Devin was telling the crowd how he accidentally walked in the lady's room and ended up talking to a girl who was dropping a duce. Super nice, as was Mauricio from Kataklysm. You tend to meet a bunch of cool people when your guitarist is (was) Bobby Gustafson (Overkill).

I love his work in Strapping Young Lad, but honestly never listened to his other stuff. I'll definitely have to pick some up and have a listen.

I've never been a big fan of SYL or DTP's albums, but I saw DTP live with Between the Buried and Me, Cynic and Scale the Summit at the Troc in Philly a couple years ago and wow! That guy sure knows how to entertain. One of the best live performers I've ever seen. Even my girlfriend enjoyed it!

He is a great entertainer. He almost was like a stand up comedian between songs when I saw him.
