Is it really that bad?

All the "stars" seem loaded to me.

Yeah, but for every one "loaded" star there are literally hundreds -maybe thousands- of wish-they-were stars, in debt up to their gills, struggling, and being ripped off by the system. Worst among them are the ones who, just as Dale says, got big enough to make a million for their label but who spent their advances on the "star lifestyle" and went into deep, deep debt as soon as their one hit faded.

No fair you telling him that, Bongo; I'm still trying to unload a shipment of left-handed hammers and metric crescent wrenches, and someone who still believes in the tooth fairy might just buy 'em from me!

Signing with a record company as a 'potential' star act is akin to mortgaging your talent at credit card interest rates.

To market and merchandise yourself is probably much more difficult, but more honest to your craft. Recording companies push the stuff they sign on us because that's all they have.

Indies are undermining the corporate's grip on our attention by throwing more info-music out there.

It's all helpful, but the music business was/is never easy.
