Did Rickenbacker ever make a "4001-style" guitar?

...or could this be a custom job? I've never seen anything like it!

(By the way, I don't know who the guy is. Just a random pic I found on Google. And sorry if this thread is in the wrong place.)

Yes, they did. Check out the slanted (but not fanned) frets!

Wow, that was quick!

Slanted frets, eh? That's bizarre (in a great way)! Way cool design feature.

I take it the slants are supposed to make chord shapes easier?

I'm not sure if they do because at the end of the day, the distance between the frets is the same.

And yes, this kinda is the wrong forum for this but I gotta say I kind of like it but something tells me that model didn't really catch on. I was kinda expecting there to be a Ric 400X guitar equivalent, though, as most "classic" bass models tend to be based on a guitar model if you think about it.

As in not fanned?

Now would not be a bad time for a reissue. With the direction metal is taking, this would be a great alternative to the typical pointy guitars.

That is very cool looking. I have a 1975 Fireglo cherry sunburst 4001 Rickenbacker that matches with that guitar.

First Non-catalog pic I've ever seen of one. On him, it looks like a toy.

I'm a bass player first and foremost, but I've always lusted after those 481s.

if the model was not popular on the first go round i doubt they would risk investing in a re issue....i've seen a lot of bands and never once was anyone playing one of these
