Did your parents play an instrument too?

I was wondering if the music 'gene' is passed down. I play bass (obviously) and my father was a respected and fairly successful sax player. His father was a banjo player (no jokes, ok). BTW I played in many jazz/rock/funk bands with my father when he was alive. A great mentor.
Who else is "carrying the baton", so to speak?
Did/are you play with your parent(s)?

Just found a pic of dad in the mid sixties, 2nd on right(sax)

My biological father played drums on a track or two by Gene Pitney, in the late 50's or early 60's. My mom played piano, but not as a pro.
My wife is an amazing singer/songwriter. Her mother is a violinist, and her dad played trombone and organ for Blood, Sweat, And Tears. He is now an AMAZING jazz pianist.

My grand mother and my mother played piano. My cousin was a pro pianist (recordings, concerts, travel, the whole thing).

My father experimented with accordian but never really played it.

This is interesting. Dad also played alto, tenor, baritone, flute, clarinet and piano. He has played with some of the biggest names too. He always felt embarrassed when talking about that, as if it was bragging.

My mom plays trumpet (played in the Iowa State University marching band!) Nowadays she plays trumpet in community band and at church. I was blessed to play with her in the church's praise band for about a year. My dad doesn't play any instruments.

My siblings have played various instruments and we've all played piano.

Dad couldn't carry a tune in a bucket.

Mom was a trained classical pianist. She gave up the chance at a career in music to get married and have kids.

She retired from teaching piano for fourty-five years back in 2004.

She's 84 now and can still whip out a mean Rachmanninof Prelude in C# Minor if I bug her enough.

Oh yeah. Both parents played piano, from boogie woogie to classical.

My dad gave me piano lessons from age 10-12. I disliked it at the time, but I'm sure it provided a great musical foundation.

It seems that, to be raised surrounded by music, is a definate benefit, if you become a musician later in life.

it sure would have been. none of my family is musically inclined or i would have started younger. the closest i got was my dad wanted to play bass and had one, but never played it, so i took it.

That's what I mean, maybe you inherited some music genes. The part of the brain where music is recieved, has been more developed in children of musicians. I'm going to do some research, and get back with my findings.

My Dad plays bass, and still does. He was playing bass as far back as I can remember in bands in England, and when we moved to Australia. The reason I began playing bass was because of watching my dad rehearse, and having his bass around to play, and that's when I decided that I needed a bass of my own. It's also good, cos we can borrow each others gear if need be. I just found that I was drawn to bass, and put it down to my Dad playing long before I was born and after.
I have also been onstage with my dad at a few of his shows, for a few songs here and there.

Your father will know the 'Beachcombers'. My Dad was in them too. England in the mid-sixties was a happening place.
