Sign in to disble this ad
Well i have a little nephew and my brother whants me to teach him music some day. He is only one so i will teach him when he turns five. I know its a long way tell then but i whant to kick the ball around

So will a young child be more interested in a guitar?

And whts the diffrance between bass and guitar? instead of it haveing two extra strings.

Just a thought...If you don't know the difference between a bass and guitar, you might not be the best teacher.

Pretty good at winding people in though

Ooof. Agree with that. Better sort it out right now before teaching your nephew.

And don't forget to actually learn either of the instruments if you wish to teach it. I heard it makes it a bit easier.

You'll just have to wait and see.

Put it this way, the bass should not be called a "guitar" at all IMO, but a bass "instrument". Only thing they have in common is their shape.

The bass guitar has far more in common with the guitar than any other instrument. Left hand technique is virtually the same, with only minor differences in right hand technique.

In fact, the bass guitar has more in common with the guitar than it does with the double bass (they share similar roles, but the only commonality there is how the strings are tuned).

Oh, and moved to Miscellaneous.

I agree - sounds like "the blind leading the blind"...?

Different octaves, differnet purpose, different scale lengths, different strings, different techniques etc. etc. ... I could go on...

While you're waiting until he's five, YOU could work on your spelling, seriously, and I mean that in the best possible way.

whant
diffrance

These are not words!

Exactly. I don't understand why some people are so insistent that our instrument is not a guitar. "Bass guitar" describes exactly what it is pretty much perfectly.

Just saying "bass" or "bass instrument" isn't anywhere near as informative. Ask a tuba player if you want clarification.

It's a guitar, people. Please, learn to love it.

But the whole purpose is different - you are not aiming for the same thing - so mostly, you are not strumming chords - but are rather, creating a single note line that drives the music forward rhythmically...etc. etc.

You are also working in a different octave and sonic space - warm and deep, as opposed to harsh and brittle !!

I agree to some extent. A baritone sax does a different job to a soprano sax, but they're still both saxophones.

The fact that the bass guitar serves a different musical purpose to a guitar doesn't mean that it's not.... er... a bass guitar! Would anyone argue that a bass drum isn't a drum, because it serves a different purpose to a snare drum?

Hope this helps.

You, sir, have a natural talent for onomatopoeia. Nicely done.

One will get you girlz, and one will not. I'll leave it up to the collected wisdom of the TBers to debate which is which.
