Kind of in a jam...need some advice. I'm in an original rock/hardcore/experimental band, think At the drive-in meets Refused...then add Brand New melodies and Rage/Clutch Style Riffs in a 3-piece band...lol. We go a little crazy. Anyway, back to the point. I'm trying to book this band in areas we've never been. College towns that do have decent crowds on the weekends. I sent out a bunch of email and have recieved the infamous "How many people do you think you can bring out?" question...I know a few people from these towns but not many. I plan to send out posters and call local radio stations for some type of promotion, but I really have no guarantees since this is the 1st time we will be playing these towns...so...What should I say?
1.Be honest and say "I have no idea because we don't know too many people and we are not from there...but we'll do our best to promote.
2. Lie and say "I'm sure we'll have at least 30-50 people show up just for us" and hope I can get a decent amount of people to stumble into this place to see us...it is a college town!
Just want some opinions out there...A few months I got one of the same questions from another town's venue. I responded "well we are from out of town so I guess about 10-15 people" and I never received an email back...ever.
Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks

How I would handle it would be honestly. Tell them you are doing promotion ( online, paper, Etc,) and just tell them you are new to their market. Assume you will play first or last. Best bet is to get them to guarantee you time slot. And don't play any shows that you are responsible for un-sold tickets.
Just remember to be persistent and honest. It will take sometime to land a gig when you can't bring a crowd, but you will get one eventually. Just realize you won't be headlining.
Best of luck!

Seriously, if you admit that you probably wont pull a great crowd... you wont be playing. Everyone embellishes the size of their fan base and their popularity. Don't worry about it. And who knows, you might get lucky and fill the place up, right?

I was kind of thinking who the hell is going to book a band that says "We can bring 3 people...but we're going to try hard" Even shows where you are sure tons of people are coming out(Your own friends!) can completely flop for numerous reasons. I do plan on doing some serious promotion for this...anything and everything possible. |

In other towns where you're basically unknown you should tell them you'll do your best with online promotion but it's ultimately up to how well they promote and what local bands you're set up with. |

but do "lean forward" a bit. |

Have them help with the promo in their area, and guarantee them a show with a decent crowd when they come to your area. It helps, trust me! Whole "scenes" have been built on this system. |

It works.
