Dude, I still don't like to think about it. It still feels very weird to think he is gone and I will never hear another new riff from him.

RIP Dime.

I hear his relatives are suing the venue where his tragedy occurred.

Well when someone that you view as a musical hero dies, I'll be sure to give you my two cents about that person's worth. Thanks for that.

RIP Dime. One of metal's original voices.

It's a tremendous loss, really. To think though that he died on stage is unbelievable and I still can't even begin to fathom how anyone managed to let that guy get a gun out, let alone inside the venue.

I've been trying to grow my goatee long like his for the last year, but formal occassions always seem to come along and spoil that idea.

It's getting pretty long now.

The guy ran and charged through the backdoor next to the stage, nobody "let him in" or "let him get a gun out". This isn't a case of security not screening a person entering with a ticket through the front door or not using a metal detector effectively.

He was a huge dude, he could have plowed over two large security guards at the door without even breaking a sweat. The dude was mental - unfortunately there's no stopping a crackpot like that.

God, it's great to see a nice, respectfull thread about Dime. In another forum I frequent, there was a memorial thread for him too. Within 10 minutes it turned into a war between fans and people whining that he's overrated and that Pantera sucked. I hate that crap.

Anyway, RIP Dime. We miss you sorely and you won't be forgotten. I had the pleasure of seeing Pantera live in 2001. It was especially amazing because it was in fact the last show of the last tour that Pantera headlined (they did Ozzfest and stuff afterwards, but this was the last show they did as the main event).
But worry not, Pantera fans. I've heard from a number of sources that they will be putting together a 4th DVD of live and behind-the-scenes stuff. Everything from the release of the 3rd DVD to the time the band split will be included. I can't wait and I REALLY hope it's not just a rumor.

I have also heard that Vinnie will be releasing the David Allan Coe (IIRC), Dimebag, Rex, Vinnie project called "Rebel meet Rebel" in March of '06. I can't wait to hear it. For those wondering, no, it isn't typical Pantera/Damageplan type stuff.

I've heard of David Allen Coe (real southern type stuff, right?). But this other one, what's that about? They recorded stuff and never released it or what?

From MegaRock Radio:

In the year since PANTERA and DAMAGEPLAN guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott was gunned down while onstage at an Ohio nightclub, fans and friends have pledged that his life and his music will live on for years to come. Now it seems that Dimebag's legacy won't be limited to memories and familiar riffs.

"There's a lot of stuff in the archive that Dime has left us with," Dimebag's brother and bandmate Vinnie Paul told MTV News. Speaking on-camera for the first time since his brother's tragic death, Paul said that in addition to the oft-discussed collaboration that he and Dime recorded with controversial country singer David Allan Coe, there's a trove of previously unreleased Dimebag footage being compiled for a DVD collection and an assortment of songs that had been intended for the second DAMAGEPLAN album.

"They were the best [songs] yet," Vinnie said of the tracks he and Dime had been working on. "We learned a lot from being on tour, we grew as a band, and we were about to make the [equivalent of PANTERA's breakthrough sophomore album] 'Vulgar Display of Power' for DAMAGEPLAN. Basically, a band's first record is them coming together and really learning everything, and then after they're on the road and really become a unit, the next record slams. We were to that point, and it was coming, man. We felt really, really strong about it."

That material will have to wait, however, as Vinnie plans to roll out the Dimebag/Coe collaboration album, now titled "Rebel Meets Rebel", in March on his own Big Vin Records. The brothers and Coe worked on the project off and on for the better part of four years, and the result is "something that Dime was very proud of."

"It's the first thing that came to me since all of this happened, to keep my brother's legacy and everything he did alive," Vinnie said. "It's a fun record, that's what I like about it. It's not metal, it's not country — it's fun. Anybody that can smoke a joint, drink a beer, this record is for them. His Southern roots really come through big, and it's something that we were waiting on the right time to put out."

I was fortunate enough to meet Dime and the guys from Pantera briefly when we opened for them for one show back in the early 90’s. He was a great talent and a great guy. We can hear his influence in a lot of the heavy music today. He is truly missed.
