Talking Dio appreciation thread

Let's face it, the man is one of the pivotal figures of hard rock/metal. Rainbow was great, the two albums he did with Sabbath were great, and then his solo career set the bar for years to come. He molded the template for power metal along with Iron Maiden. He invented the devil horns salute!

Cheesy? Undeniably so. Entertaining? Hell yes! Amazingly talented? Yup.

I was watching the Sacred Heart DVD yesterday and I was thinking why am I so entertained by this. Then it hit me, this was fun metal, not angry/sad metal. His cheese goes hand in hand with his entertainment, along with amazing voice.

Bow to the master.

We're a ship without a storm
The cold without the warm
Light inside the darkness that it needs, yeah

We're a laugh without a tear
The hope without the fear
We are coming - home

We're off to the witch
We may never never never come home
But the magic that we'll feel
Is worth a lifetime

We're all born upon the cross
The throw before the toss
You can release yourself
But the only way is down

We don't come alone
We are fire we are stone
We're the hand that writes
Then quickly moves away

We'll know for the first time
If we're evil or divine
We're the last in line
We're the last in line

You gotta love the D!

Dio has rocked for a long, long time,
Now it's time for him to pass the torch.
He has songs of wildebeests and dangers,
He has soared on the wings of a demon.

It's time to pass the torch,
You're too old to rock, no more rockin' for you.
We're takin' you to a home,
But we will sing a song about you.

And we will make sure that you're very well taken care of.
You'll tell us secrets that you've learned. Raow!
Your sauce will mix with ours,
And we'll make a good goulash baby.
Dio, time to go!
You must give your cape and scepter to me.
And a smaller one for KG.
Go! Go! Dio! Dio!

I saw Dio fight a giant spider with a laser sword. What band has the guts to fight a giant spider with a laser sword these days? None. That's who.

Long live Dio!

I like Dio's solo career, but that's about it... I didn't really like Rainbow, too much Blackmore. And I won't even talk about his Sabbath stuff.

This will kind of derail the thread a bit but... is Dio gay? "Rainbow in the Dark?"

I loved all the songs in the Heaven and Hell album. At the risk of getting flamed, IMO, Ronnie kicks Ozzy's fat ass in the vocals department. His NIB in Live Evil kicks booty!

It's the same old song
You've gotta be somewhere at sometime
They never let you fly

It's like broken glass
You get cut before you see it
So open up your eyes

You've got desire
So let it out
You've got the fire
Stand up and shout-shout

I have seen DIO 5 times, Once with Rainbow once with Sabbath and the rest solo. I was never dissapointed once. Bob Daisely is a monster on the bass and his first two solo disc's were what Metal was all about in the 80's.
I also thought that the Rainbow stuff is awesome, Mistreated and Man on a silver mountain, Tales to Babalon, One of my favorite alltime records is the often forgotten Mob Rules!! Slippin away and country Girl are killer, One of Sabbaths best albums.
Long Live Rock&Roll

Mike

You're missing the infamous 'Ronnie and the Redcaps".

I've heard that first seven inch.

No so good.

Yeah, I've heard it's not so great. It's amazing though that he's been in bands since the 50's !!!!

Yet another reason to love Dio: he played bass in ELF! Only in the beginning though I think.

The Redcaps:

Is it just me or does he look like he's already thinking about dragons and rainbows in that Redcaps pic?

Yes, he does look like a leprochaun but that's why I find watching him so entertaining.

Dio's stage presence > Ozzy's stage presence

Dont get me wrong, I love Sabbath w/ Ozzy...but Dio transformed that band. They were really falling apart at end of the Ozzy years. Heaven & Hell is a fantastic album. Listen to Never Say Die, then Heaven and Hell and you'll see what I mean.
